Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition Aug. 28-30

WAYZGOOSE!: We swear no geese are involved (or will be harmed) during Saturday's 8th Annual Letterpress Wayzgoose, a day to creatively honor the letterpress; expect demos, shop tours, and cool designs. Make sure not to miss the Steamroller Letterpress Smackdown! There is nothing cooler than blending the letterpress traditions of the 17th century with the 21st century techniques, design, and horsepower. You'll watch design teams create a poster and then try printing it with a two-ton steamroller, used in place of the traditional printing press.

Once Upon a District 9

Sci-fi as a genre really shines when it addresses social issues via metaphor, which has really been lacking in recent Hollywood films--and no, Transformers 2 is not chockful of metaphor. Lucky for us, there's alien apartheid allegory District 9 (opening tomorrow at the Neptune and the Meridian).

Grand Illusion's 5-Million-Year Trip, Just $8

When you talk great sci-fi movies of the 1960s, a few titles--Planet of the Apes, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Fantastic Voyage--spring immediately to mind. But the Grand Illusion plays host to one of the era's most overlooked gems for much of this week.

The Tiny Spaceship Lands in Seattle Saturday

It's tiny, it's funny, it's...science fiction? The Tiny Spaceship plays this weekend in the second session (7 p.m.) of the fourth annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival Saturday at the Cinerama. [Ed. note: These screenings totally sold out last year, so we'd recommend you get your tix in advance.]

HUGE AMOUNTS OF CHEESE: The Cheese Festival is upon us! This is one of our top three favorite events of the year (#2: our birthday, #3: Christmas). Several reasons: a city block full of cheese, friendly vendors, wholesale prices on bottles in the wine garden (don't buy the red wine that says "bacon" three times in its description, we made that mistake last year), and (it bears repeating) a city block full of cheese.

This video of the '62 World's Fair has actually been on YouTube for awhile, but it managed to escape our notice until SciFi.com posted it (thanks for the heads-up, Seattle LJ). Favorite scene: about two minutes in when they steal a rickshaw. There's also lots of cool phone technology which makes a lot of sense since this is a Ma Bell production.

What do George Clooney and local SF author Neal Stephenson have in common? The diamond age:

Diamond Age, based on Neal Stephenson's best-selling novel The Diamond Age: Or a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, is a six-hour miniseries from Clooney and fellow executive producer Grant Heslov of Smokehouse Productions.

Okay, we're bummed we didn't get Slint tickets for Saturday night. If you did, we hate you and would like to point out we'll undoubtedly be having a great time watching Mansquito on the SciFi Network at 9pm. We are sure watching a show about a half-man/half-mosquito is way better than seeing a legendary indie band take the stage after years apart. As an aside, we wish we were in the pitch meeting for 'Mansquito,' much like we wish we were in the meeting about the show 'Blind Justice.' "See he's a cop and he's blind, so we'll call the show 'Blind Justice!'"
