"Egalitarian, Progressive" Math Coming to Seattle High Schools

The P-I says that the Seattle school board voted to adopt (4-3) the Key Curriculum Press Discovering Mathematics textbooks series--for algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, pre-calculus and calculus classes across the district. (Statistics classes get an Addison-Wesley textbook.)

Over the past week, a sharp increase of one-off swine flu cases in students raised a few eyebrows, as King County health officials decided to shut classroom doors for seven days. Now they are kicking themselves and second-guessing future decisions. With no confirmed cases in Washington and the end of the school year in sight, King County won't be closing any more schools that have a student or two with suspect symptoms. Now they say simply, teachers and children should just stay home if they are sick.

A teenager was shot by a gun his stepbrother both obtained and stored at Highline High School. So can the Highline school district be held partially responsible for his death? How about the stepbrother's family? The victim's mom, Michele Lucero, thinks so: long-distance from New Mexico, she's suing the district, her kid's father, and his wife for failing to divine the future. Er, technically she's calling it "failing to secure the gun" that issued the bullet that killed her son. This is a fascinating twist in what has been a complex, emotional case since Michael Miller was shot by his stepbrother nearly three years ago. What will it mean for the district, we wonder, if Lucero wins her lawsuit? Will it change anything?

No, Seattlest is not just a fan of alliteration and 80's slang, as the headline might suggest. Burying the beef, is the current plan of the Seattle Public School District to rid itself of 230 cases of possibly contaminated beef. The beef, provided to school districts through a USDA lunch program, came from a California slaughterhouse in the center of the largest beef recall in USDA history.

[Full Disclosure: We were in APP (then called "IPP") from 1st-8th grade.]

Is a new front opening up in the Culture Wars? Seattle school officials say no, but King 5's producers not-so-subtly imply yes.

Back in February, a group of volunteer tutors from 826 Seattle walked into John Marshall Alternative School and asked students to write about change. After six weeks of intensive one-on-one tutoring, they left with a book’s worth. And it was with much celebration that students, tutors, friends and family filled Marshall’s auditorium Tuesday night to launch "Burning the Past," the latest collection of essays from this incredible collaboration.

Over at new Crosscut.com, Knute Berger reports that the Seattle School District will send four local high schoolers to the White Privilege Conference in Colorado Springs.

[Congressman Dave] Reichert rode with Bush in his motorcade when the president came to the Eastside in June to raise money for Reichert and the state Republican Party.

We completely bought that whole line about the Seattle Public School District closing schools to bring the budget into some semblence of balance. We've had our coffee this morning, though, and the fog has been lifted. School closures have nothing to do with the budget - It's all about condos.

When we lived in Los Angeles we worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, more specifically we worked on grant trying to determine if the state mandated mathematics pacing plan was helping or hurting students. Guess what there Oppenheimer, it was hurting them.

We heard a rumor and since rumors are one of our favorite things to propagate (second only to "the species") we're getting off to a good Friday. Unfortunately, while there are potentially lots of good rumors surrounding the Seattle public school district (no school closures, across the board school closures, Gates Foundation bought the district) AND lots of good rumors surrounding Apple (new wireless iPod will get you chicks, Apple recalling those crusty and yellowing iPod sleeves, Jobs going to space and not coming back), this rumor falls squarely into the "meh" category.

Well, it happened. In a 7-2 vote that was never extended to the public, the King County Council agreed to spending at least $500,000 to change our logo from a crown to the likeness of Martin Luther King Jr. And to add to the surreal ludicrousness of this move, Ron Sims is designing the new logo. The jesters are now running the castle, Seattle.

Seattlest regrets there isn't a "Delete All" button when it comes to Port leadership.

ID=1984: Continuing on yesterday's Database Of Oppression theme, Mayor Nichols is pushing a city database to hold information on troublesome night spots.

A Seattle middle-schooler was recently found dead after an apparent round of "the choking game" in which she tied a karate belt around her neck. In response to that incident and others the Seattle Public School District is going on an information campaign to raise awareness of this age-old method of getting high. The standard "talk to your kids about the dangers of __insert idiot behavior here___" seems to be the path they're taking on the website being circulated to parents.

The Seattle Public School District has proposed a new budget to the board and Seattlest is guessing that it doesn't include any school closings. Instead, a variety of one-time financial sources will help bring a little balance to the budget, at least for the time being. Let's postpone those closings one more year, shall we?

Do you remember that show 'Remember the 70s' on VH1? It spawned 'Remember the 80s', 'Remember the 90s’, and 'Celebrity Fit Club.' Well get ready for 'Remember the Gubernatorial Election.' It's going to be a fun time as we look back and remember the election that never really ended…oh my god, is that what we were wearing in 2004?
