Step away from the turkey. Seattle's Bill Marler has the latest on one of the largest meat recalls ever--and the products may still be in your grocer's refrigerated section. One more reason to go vegetarian like you've been meaning to, right?

FDA Warns: Sprouts Linked to Salmonella Not Yet Recalled
Tainted sprouts may still be on the market, as a grower refuses to voluntarily recall. Her reasoning? All the bad seeds have probably already been consumed. Don't you feel safe?
Salmonella Flavor
On Tuesday, the FDA confirmed that Tim's Cascade Snacks, based in Algona, WA, voluntarily recalled its Sweet Maui Onion Hawaiian Style potato chips and onion rings for potential Salmonella contamination. This announcement was made just a few days after Tacoma-based Johnny's Fine Foods recalled its French Dip Powdered Au Jus because of possible Salmonella contamination.
How Safe Is Your Food?
With the multi-state outbreak of E. Coli infections due to E. coli occurring just after this poll was taken, confidence in our nation's food is now likely lower than the report indicates. That outbreak resulted in 21 ill in 16 states, including 1 in Washington.
Another Reason to Avoid Alfalfa Sprouts
We happen to dislike alfalfa sprouts intensely, for reasons we can't quite put our finger on. But from now on, we'll just go with the "they occasionally have salmonella" excuse. Nine people in Washington have been sickened by locally grown alfalfa sprouts, including at least two people who required hospitalization. This outbreak of salmonella bacteria has been connected to sprouts from Sprouters Northwest Inc., located in Kent. If you happen to have some sprouts in your fridge, best to throw them out. And, in our opinion, never buy them again.
So Much for Burgers on the 4th of July
Well, unless you want your burger to be a bun, pickles, lettuce cheese, and condiments. Or perhaps of the exotic meat or veggie variety. Local QFCs and Fred Meyers (parent company: Kroger) are recalling ground beef purchased at their stores over the past few weeks. The beef is being recalled after an outbreak of E. coli in the Midwest traced to the beef. Of course this recall comes on the heels of the are-they-or-aren't-they-killer salmonella-tainted tomatoes outbreak, which has yet to be solved.
