Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, August 8-10

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, August 8-10

When the creativity faucet is on full blast, it can get tricky to turn it off--so these 25 local artists aren't even going to try. Instead, they have signed up to participate in a 24-hour art marathon in a beautiful old building in Georgetown, presented to the general public by CoCA for the 16th year in a row. By the time you read this, the marathon will have commenced; there are still twenty-some hours to pay your $25 (or $50 with wine and dinner) and get in on the silent and live auctions. This weekend's also the monthly Georgetown Art Attack--seems like it has potential to be quirky and interesting, right? Everybody loves arting in Georgetown! more ›

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Tomorrow

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Tomorrow

After a bit of a lull, it appears that Rock Paper Scissors is back, this time courtesy of the Seattle Gaels, the local organization celebrating the Irish sporting heritage. Unlike the officially sanctioned tournaments we attended years ago, this new tournament doesn't appear to have official backing, but the Gaels have updated the structure in a way that should make the event more fun for all. more ›

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Tonight

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Tonight

Tonight at the Baltic Room is the widely anticipated Rock Paper Scissors Tournament. Thus far, Seattlest is a far better scholar than player, besting none in tournament play while coaching others to near-victory. We think our luck's about to change though, as we managed to best our opponent yesterday in pre-tournament play. We have a good feeling about tonight - but we've said that every time and not had that work out. In any case, these are always a grand time, it's Friday, and the Baltic Room serves booze, so get your weekend started on the right foot - with a crushing defeat by Seattlest. more ›

Man Man: An Interrobang of a Show

Man Man: An Interrobang of a Show

For weeks we've been waiting for the opportunity to share our latest obsession. Unlike previous obsessions with curling, competitive eating, or most recently Rock Paper Scissors, this obsession is more academic in nature. It concerns the rare, not yet standard punctuation mark known as the interrobang. It combines the exclamation point and the question mark to express both excitement and disbelief. If you've ever said "What!?" then you know how it should be used. more ›

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament: Capitol Hill Edition

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament: Capitol Hill Edition

We extolled the virtues of Rock Paper Scissors before, so you can read that for the background on why we're lucky to have a tournament. Well, it's time for a new tournament, this time, the Capitol Hill edition. Tonight, at 8pm at the Baltic Room, it's time for Seattlest to assert its dominance. After months of reading strategy and practice, we're confident that we can make it past the first round this time, and outlast our current record of 7 seconds of participation. Can we do it? Will we be ridiculously shamed by one of our fellow bloggers? Will we be surrounded by a throng of Rock Paper Scissors groupies? Shunned by all after a quick defeat? Only one way to find out (and no, waiting for the follow-up post isn't the answer we're looking for). more ›

Stalk of the Town

Will the beautiful weather stick around for our weekend? If it does, plans may change and you may see us prancing through various municipal parks. As of now, however, here's how the weekend's shaking out. more ›

Remember: Nothing Beats Rock

Remember: Nothing Beats Rock

All of the attention this weekend is on the Super Bowl, but really, who cares? There's a feigned hometown pride, but really, for most of the players in the professional ranks, they're going to play for whoever pays them the big bucks. George Bush may claim to care about black people, and the Seahawks may claim to care about Seattle, but let's wait and see what happens when it's time for contract negotiations. more ›

Even the Competitions are Competing

Even the Competitions are Competing

There are plenty of us for whom both the successful season of the Seahawks and the less-than-stellar season of the Supersonics mean absolutely nothing, other than potential for increased traffic. While we may watch highlights on ESPN, most professional sports just don't have any appeal. Watching the less than heralded sports is where the real action is. Who doesn't marvel at the technique of Kobayashi, the overexcited commentators of the dart championships, or the sublime grace of curling? For sheer entertainment, it's the offbeat competitions that can't be beat, and they're well worth the strange looks you get when you tell people what you're doing with your time. We've already touched on Seattle's propensity for finding new ways to declare winners and losers, part of the reason we love this town. Tonight features two very different takes on the "battle" concept, one for head nodding, the other for more corporeal reactions. more ›
