Coming of Age with MilkMilk Lemonade at Washington Ensemble Theatre

Coming of Age with MilkMilk Lemonade at Washington Ensemble Theatre

Emory, a fifth-grader living on a dilapidated chicken farm, isn't much like the other boys. While the others play 'ball, Emory choreographs ribbon-dance routines. While the other boys recklessly set things afire, Emory fantasizes about the bright lights of broadway. Or he sings sons from Annie. Or he confides in Linda, a giant chicken, his best friend. No, Emory doesn't play the conventional farm-boy too well. MilkMilk Lemonade, which is running now at the Washington Ensemble Theatre, is Emory's coming-of-age story. more ›

The Week in Restaurant Reviews

  • Those lentils at Lecosho are getting a lot of press lately. Sheehan uses the phrase "master of lentils" in his review to describe "whoever prepped the bowl of sharply flavored, wine-dark, savory little buggers." Elsewhere on the menu he finds "too many little mistakes," but that's not preventing the dining room from filling to capacity every night. [Seattle Weekly]
  • Surly Gourmand brings his "your mom" jokes to Elemental, where diners relinquish control and submit entirely to the pre-determined menu. Not every dish is flawless, says Surly, but "fuck it"--Elemental is a hell of a bargain with some awesome food and enough wine that some diners complain about getting "too drunk," a sad situation comparable to having too much money to fit in your wallet. Seattlest’s Than Brothers PhO-dyssey

You may be under the impression that Seattle's numerous Than Brothers locations are equal to each other, each serving delicious pho in similarly disheveled and and unappealing dining rooms. We’re here to tell you that you are wrong. Over the past year, Seattlest David and Rachael have exhaustively toured Seattle's five Than Brothers to give you the best, the worst, and most importantly, the goldfish-iest of Seattle’s most ubiquitous of pho restaurants. Today we’ll be providing a brief overview of the distinctive features of each Seattle location. Friday we’ll be back with the first annual 2008 Seattlest Than Brothers PhO-dyssey awards! more ›

We're Rabid About the Barking Dog

We're Rabid About the Barking Dog

We do love us some bar food. French fries, burgers (veggie ones anyway), fish 'n' chips. Man, we could live on that stuff and often think of the Albert Brooks comedy Defending Your Life when we allow ourselves to indulge, because he’s told that, while waiting to defend his life, he can do whatever he wants and not worry about the health consequences. We're pretty sure that’s the reason we're hoping the afterlife mirrors that movie. more ›

AUTHOR, AUTHOR: In Bich Minh Nguyen's memoir, Stealing Buddha's Dinner, a young family escapes from Vietnam shortly before the fall of Saigon and relocates to Grand Rapids, Michigan. "In her recreation of a world populated by family ties, Ritz crackers, and Judy Blume books, she has captured the 1980s with perfection," says Kirkus Reviews. more ›

Songs in the Key of Soul

Songs in the Key of Soul

superfly.jpgSeattlest can't claim to understand the obsession in hipster fashion with the eighties. At last week's edition of Rag$ to Riche$, it seemed every other female was sporting something inspired by the Reagan era. That fit with some of the tunes being thrown in the mix, but in the case of both apparel and music, age is not enough to denote quality. Many of the songs and clothing choices from that evening need to regain their forgotten status. more ›
