Last weekend, more than 1,100 planeswalkers descended on Tacoma for Magic: The Gathering's Grand Prix. After the last lava axe had been wielded, the last craw wurm summoned, and the last holy strength enchantment cast, winners were announced and, lo and behold, the fourth place finisher was Seattle’s own Charles Dupont, 24, a software testing contractor for Microsoft.
This time there is no holding back for the City of Newcastle, as they (again) petition the United States Postal Service to get their very own zip code. Since the creation of Newcastle in 1994, homeowners and businesses had to identify themselves with one of Renton's two zip codes (98056 and 98059). After 15 years of confusion, Newcastle wants to hear the zip code rants to support their petition for postal independence. They hope this will prevent further zip code headaches that include the loss of sales tax dollars based off of zip codes and the directional hot mess where most addresses in Newcastle are considered an "unknown location" by most computers and even delivery drivers.
The current owner of Jimi Hendrix's childhood home has the little house resting on a foundation in a Renton mobile home park across the street from the musician's grave. Next week, however, is the final deadline for the owner, Pete Sikov, to come up with money, a plan, and a convincing argument for how he can meet City of Renton requirements to renovate the house appropriately; otherwise, he'll have to tear it down.
TechFlash has a post today titled "Is Classmates.com Cutting Back?" based on what they're "hearing." What we're hearing is that a hiring freeze has been lifted (Exhibit A--look for jobs in Renton). And NWCN reports that Classmates.com is making money hand over mortarboard. (If that makes sense. We're just trying to keep it light, people. Mortarboard, it's fun.) So that's what we know. What do you hear?
The feds shut down three more brothels masquerading as tanning salons, this time in Greenwood, Tukwila and Renton. They're still using that cover story? Come on, people. Now that three more "salons" have bit the dust, we're sure Seattle will move further along the journey towards restoring the shining image of tanning salons as our community's beacons of health and moral rectitude. Also, our condolences go out to the undercover investigators who risked infectious skin diseases in the name of gathering evidence for this case.
We have a pressing question for you Seattlest readers: Which headline from today's local news is more awful? We simply can't decide on our own.
For the second time in less than a year, the Seattle Sounders have upset MLS-side Chivas USA in the US Open Cup, defeating the top-flight team 2-0 in last night's third round action at the Starfire Sports Complex in Renton. MLS-bound Sebastien Le Toux and Taylor Graham scored in the contest. The Sounders next face the Kansas City Wizards (another MLS squad) in the quarterfinals at Qwest Field next Tuesday night.
Yesterday we googled the phrase "best restaurant in Renton." (Don't ask.) It turned up this post on A Displaced Hipster's Guide to Renton, which gives the Melrose Grill top honors in Seattle's southern suburb. DH's mission statement: "Two years ago, my wife and I moved out of the city of Seattle to the lovely suburby city of Renton, Washington. We've learned to survive without great restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment--here's how we do it."
