Local blogger Shane Becker has a hilarious/infuriating post up about his experience being detained by police while shopping at REI's flagship store. While waiting in a customer service line, Becker says he saw two Loomis guys working on an ATM. Never having seen the inside of an ATM, he walked over and snapped a picture with his iPhone. After Becker refused to show his ID for taking the photo, things went very wrong, with a Loomis guy offering to tackle him if he tried to leave, REI loss prevention officers showing up, and eventually the SPD, who put him in cuffs and detained him for half an hour at the West Precinct. Becker, who one suspects was writing his blog post in his head the whole time, ends with a list of just a few snapshots of the insides of ATMs you can find on the internet. Since the only thing worse than being on the dole is being kicked off it, we're glad the feds are extending our unemployment benefits in this state. Even REI is cutting jobs. Guess that outdoorsy date scene from The Bachelor didn't help?

Did the Sky Fall Overnight?

Seattlest looked up at a snow-covered skylight and wondered whether anyone would catch their bus. Sure enough, some are running late. Good thing we went to REI on December 26 and scored some of these.

At 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning, July 12th, 2,427 bicyclists set out from the Husky Stadium parking lot to make the 204.5-mile Group Health Seattle to Portland Classic in one day. Fifteen minutes before that, we were drowsily slumped over the steering wheel of our car, stuck in the traffic jam on NE 45th St. headed towards University Village. Around us, cyclists with enough foresight to their bikes to the event were zooming downhill, past the poor suckers who drove.

NPR IN DA HOUSE: Seattlest was kind of surprised to hear that tickets are still available for NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me live show at the Paramount tonight. We've never personally been to a live radio show before, but we do love the N to the PR, and we're guessing this'll be well worth your time. In case you don't mack on the NPR, it's the silly quiz show that takes a humorous look at current events. Good stuff.

Who delivers the best customer service in the country? Amazon.com: According to the National Retail Federation/American Express survey gauging consumer attitudes toward retailers' customer service, which was released Thursday, Amazon topped a number of venerable retailers for best meeting consumer needs. Who came in second? Nordstrom. Seventh? REI. That's right: local companies took 3 of the top 10 spots on the survey. A nationwide survey. "Online consumers are completely changing the definition of service," said...
