Maktub's fifth album, Five, is out today and as a thank you to fans, they're offering free downloads of the whole damn thing. In particular, it's a thank you to the 200 fans who funded their last album Start It Over. Hugs all around!

Our predilection for local county/folk songsmiths aside, our interest was piqued when we heard that a Brooklyn band that has received praise for playing melodies in roughly the same vein would be hitting Chop Suey tonight in support of Ben Kweller. In advance of their first trip to Seattle, we were able to catch up with mandolinist and singer Danny Erker of Jones Street Station to talk about exploring “the great American genres,” and reconciling playing traditionally rural music in urban settings, among other topics.

Yesterday, On the Boards announced their next season of shows, and we're excited. OtB is the company we most often recommend to friends, particularly if they're , classic tragedy and issue plays about people coming to terms with things are right up your alley. But a lot of people aren't like that, and for them, the whipsmart contemporary performance at OtB, visually interesting and intellectually stimulating, is going to be a more enjoyable night out, so long as they can get over the initial "it's performance art" thing.

THE SECRETS OF CHANGE: According to this website, Rikki Ducornet is "a being unchained, transcendent as a mythical angel." That's probably placing the po-mo writer and poet on bit of a pedestal, but it's true--at least in the sense that Ducornet is more than a little "out there." She reads from her book of short, surrealist stories, The One Marvelous Thing, at the Elliott Bay Book Co. tonight.

Looking past Bumbershoot for a second, we want to alert you to an evening we've been waiting for with bated breath--to our doctor's surprise and chagrin. So what if we're taking days off our life? If laughter is the best medicine, we might as well put ourselves in a condition to need it.

MUSIC: Ben Kweller's in town opening for Gomez at the Showbox, but the smart money is on going to see his in-store, since it's free. Go hear some great indie-pop to kick off your evening.

If you've never seen Reggie Watts (Maktub frontman, musical chameleon, stand-up stream of consciousness guru) loop himself live, head over to Vimeo and witness the genius.

Local dance collaborative locust debuted the world premiere of their new dance-video-music mashup "Mockumentary" at On the Boards last night, and it was one of the most intriguing, beautiful, dark, and thoroughly enjoyable performances that we've been to in a very long time.

Jose Gonzalez - Seattlest managed to find entry into the KEXP's live broadcast area featuring Bumbershoot artists. Jose Gonzalez's set was absolutely perfect, the smaller crowd (~30 people) and intimate staging perfect for his one man, one guitar formula. It was funny to watch some of the ladies get swoony over him, and we have to admit we were getting pretty starry eyed ourselves.

This has been a busy week, at least in terms of announcements as to who's involved in things taking place sometime in the future. Seattlest breaks it down:

For approximately the nine millionth time, Seattlest implores you to experience the musical majesty that is "Awesome." Simply put, we love this band---they are a hilarious group of guys and truly talented musicians to boot. They're playing an early show tomorrow night at the Mirabeau Room, an event that serves as a preview of their upcoming epic art/music/comedy extraordinaire noSIGNAL, debuting a month from now at On the Boards. Tomorrow night's set will feature some of the new noSIGNAL material and, assuredly, many of their classic hits. Also in attendance: everybody's favorite afroed luvaman Reggie Watts. Like most people in town, Seattlest has a giggly schoolgirl crush on Reggie, as he is one charming big-haired man.

Were you at Bumbershoot on Friday? We were. Here is what we saw…

If you're not watching Game 7 (go Pistons), consider heading downtown to the waterfront for the SAM Olympic Sculpture Park construction kickoff event spectacular. The sculpture park isn't set to be completed until a year from now, but the Party in the Park---sponsored by Target?---is tonight from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. Featuring music and jump roping and dancing (oh my), this soiree is free and for the whole family. Seattlest is particularly excited for the performance of everybody's favorite afroed new wave soul luvaman, Reggie Watts.
