Besides live animals, we're most looking forward to the food: Food at the Puyallup Fair is either surprisingly bad or surprisingly good.

Advance Notice on Doing the Puyallup

With our warm-again, not-again weather this summer it is hard to imagine that it is time to start thinking about The Fair. The Puyallup is offering online deals including the all-you-can-ride Dizzy Pass, but most parents would have to take off work to take advantage of that. There is an opening weekend special which includes admission and seven rides for $20 (you have to click on "Continue" and then "Ticket Packages" to find it), but as every parent knows, seven rides is just a good start. A standard sheet of 20 tickets is $15, with each ride taking a few tickets.

Say what you want about American Idol's biggest success story, Ms. Carrie Underwood—including that she can't dance, bless her heart—but it can't be said the woman doesn't have a strong set of pipes. She'll be the last major performer during the Puyallup Fair's final weekend. If there's anything in the show that remotely resembles her performance from last year's Grammy Awards, we'll just die:

DRINK FOR URBAN ART: The second Northwest location of Upper Playground, a San Francisco-based urban art and clothing store, opens this weekend--and there's a swanky cocktail party/gallery viewing at Chapel on Saturday night to celebrate. The clothing and accessories at Upper Playground are the epitome of dope, but what we're really into is the art. For a sample, check out these poster prints of various artists' renderings of Obama, going for $200 a piece. We're particularly fond of this one by Mear One, an artist who will be doing a "live painting" at the Chapel party.

ARTSY TAILGATE PARTY: Let's hang out in the parking lot of performance space On the Boards with actors, dancers, season subscribers and the staff of On the Boards at their season opening tailgate party. We'll defy artsy-fartsy stereotypes and indulge in free hot dogs, birthday cake, and $1 beers while we sit in the beds of pickup trucks and blast our music loud enough to piss off the entirety of lower Queen Anne. We can guarantee that everyone there will be as hot as Otb's upcoming season.

Eaten: An onion burger and brick of fries.

If you need to experience an entirely different kind of pride, head over to Buckley, WA (near Enumclaw) for the second day of the annual Buckley Log Show. If you're like us, you won't know what most of the events actually are, but you've no doubt passed these kinds of competitions on ESPN2, as lumberjacks go head to head to slice, chop, and climb. It's loud and a bit disorienting, but there's something refreshing in knowing that you can end up a world away after less than an hour's drive. And if you're counting the days until the Puyallup Fair, know that the Buckley Log Show has the same scones (although the jam isn't quite as good).

We always try to listen to Don Slack's Swingin' Doors show on KEXP. If we aren't in the car when it's live (6-9pm on Thursdays), we catch the replay on KEXP's streaming archive.

If you missed the recent Seattle Wedding Show (AKA the Puyallup Fair for the Engaged) congratulations. If you didn’t, Seattlest is here to tell you that you’ve got a second chance at love. And poly satin. A company called Brides’ Club is having a wedding show in Bellevue this weekend.
