When your band's roster (Gonzalez on trumpet and congas; Andy Gonzalez, bass; Larry Willis, piano; Steve Berrios, drums; Joe Ford, sax/flute) has been in place since 1990, you have time to develop the musical telepathy that makes jazz jazz. And when that telepathy communicates both the bebop-and-beyond mainstream and Puerto Rican popular music (via the Bronx), you have an unusually savory mix.

It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by poop. Finally D.C. contemplated taking Vermont's place as a state and marveled at the GOP lessons learned from the "Macaca Moment."

Things are getting dire at work with regards to the World Cup. Seattlest isn't sure how many two-hour lunches it's proper to take over the course of a month, but we're quite sure we passed that number long ago. Today (deep breath) is an off day. A vacation, holiday, break, pause, a rest from leisure. There are no games today. The second round is over, and the semi-finals don't start until Friday.

Seattlest was invited by a friend to try a new Puerto Rican restaurant in Ballard called Sofrito Rico. Seattlest had recently been in Ballard and hadn't seen any new restaurants, so we couldn't quite picture where it was located. But when we walked in we realized that it was the old MiYi (Australian Pies) place, next door to Kitchen 'N Things on Market Street.
