Fall's Mouthful of Cinnamon

Fortunately, for those intending to put an apple-cinnamon dish on the fall menu, the Washington apple harvest begins in mid-August. Don’t confine apple-cinnamon pairings to dessert menus, though. One savory pairing that works well is apples, cinnamon, and foie gras. Unfortunately, just as the apple has historically symbolized sin, foie gras carries a stigma amongst a certain Seattle group.

Neighborhood News And Local Blog Round-Up

SPD Blotter with more info on this morning's hit and run at Sixth & Cherry: "They now believe that a light-colored bus with a dark stripe or dark tinted windows, is possibly involved."

Earlier today on Slog, we read about Greg Lundgren's newest "Arbitrary Art Grant," via Vital 5 Productions: $500 for someone protesting "performance art" at On the Boards this Friday between 7 and 8 p.m. at the corner of W. Roy St. and First, right before the opening of the Northwest New Works Festival. We inquired with OtB if they had an official response, and they sent us a link to the below video.

The California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8--which bans legal recognition of same-sex marriages--yesterday, sparking a wave of protests across the country. Here in Seattle, a "Day of Decision" rally was held downtown at Westlake Center. The Stranger reports State Senator Ed Murray was ambivalent about attending, saying, "so few people are willing to get off their butts to do something about marriage equality here, in the state where they themselves live." But of course he showed, along with Rep. Jamie Pedersen (photo) and a host of others. Hundreds of people crowded Westlake, and afterwards a smaller number took the chance to march up to Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill. Check out Seattlest Flickr Pool member subsetsum's "Day of Decision" photoset for a full chronicling.

Can't Miss It: Tuesday

'CAUSE HATE IS JUST UGLY: The California Supreme Court announced last Friday that they would be handing down their decision today on the constitutionality of the infamous Prop 8. The court upheld the same-sex marriage ban, but allowed the existing 18,000 unions to stand. Since the news is mixed, it's fitting that there's a rally and/or protest taking place at Westlake Center Park tonight. Get out and show your support either way.

<strike>Cornish Students</strike> Youth Angrily Protest Something

We were just walking past the Cornish College of the Arts buildings on Capitol Hill and saw this ragtag group of protesters [UPDATE: not Cornish students, they tell us] out front. They had an informational hand-out, so we didn't stop to ask them for details, but maybe we should have, because we can't make out what exactly it is they're so exercised about. Does this make sense to anyone?

The limping remnant of the once-mighty P-I has a piece of good news out of Philadelphia, where a local animal rights group says they're going to skip Foie Gras week (starts today, didn't ya know) because "picketing isn't effective." Are you listening, Northwest Animal Rights Network?

PETA Sea Kittens Expire on Pike Street

PETA is concerned that fish aren't lovable enough for people to stop eating them, so they have cooked up the "sea kitten" campaign to reframe the argument for vegetarianism. Today a group of them were downtown raising consciousnesses--primarily that of males with camera phones, we're going to guess. We don't particularly care for fish sticks, but if they plan on messing with the tuna on our salade niçoise, we have a problem.

Speaking of rallies, the anti-ricin bar crawl on Capitol Hill also counts as a weekend protest. Drinking at the Crescent certainly sounds more fun than marching downtown, too. Where are all the photos, we want to know?! This Flickr stream, via CHS, is all we could find in terms of hard evidence that everything went down as planned. Did you attend? Better yet, did anyone make it through all eleven bars?

Seattlest didn't make it personally to the rally at the University of Washington, but our beautiful and talented sister Anna did, and she's texting us madly with updates and photos. She estimates 200 in attendance to protest John Fay's article in the Daily.

Seattlest's college didn't really have "protests," per se, so we're considering heading down to the UW campus on our lunch break to catch some of the student-organized rally to ask The Man for "LGBT training with The Daily staff and for a more inclusive campus community." Why is everyone so worked up? Read both the original pro-Prop 8 article by John Fay and our guest editorial, a response to Fay's article by Chris Kaasa; then, meet up with everyone outside the Husky Union Building at 12:30. Bra-burning optional.

Seth over at Sports Northwest magazine has a picture of a Seahawks fan who seems bound and determined to have the worst weekend of his life. Not sure what Corinthians has to say about Matt Hasselbeck interceptions, though.

For today's Prop 8 march and protest, the weather cooperated nicely. Obviously, God loves a civil rights parade.

Flickr user El Gregein went to the Scientology protest at Seattle's Westlake Center and all we got was this awesome photo in our Flickr pool. Which is, come to think of it, quite a lot. Thanks. (And are your photos in there?)

If we were feeling snarky, we'd say it serves them right: after all, the vandalism of the booth is a mini-version of what the GOP leadership has done to the United States' image overseas in the past eight years, right? Poetic justice! But something about setting things on fire in the middle of a notoriously crowded festival strikes us as...well...inexcusably dangerous and short-sighted, even if what you're setting on fire symbolizes foreign and domestic policy of which you are very, very tired after eight years.

An unconfirmed report in the 's Big Blog claims members of the local Georgian community and their supporters plan a protest today at noon at the Russian consulate at Sixth & Virginia. The protest is in response to Russia's attack on Georgian territory following Georgia's failed attempt late last week to recapture the breakaway region of South Ossetia. Relations between Georgia and Russia have been strained for years, since pro-Western President Mikheil Saakashvili came to power in 2003's Rose Revolution. Russia under the nationalist Vladimir Putin has sought to keep neighboring countries and former Soviet republics like Georgia and Ukraine from moving into the Western fold.

It's a hard world in which to be emo these days, a reality which--let's face it--leads only to the unending spiral of thicker and thicker black eyeliner. In the past few months, emo culture has received extra scrutiny in connection with a number of disturbing headlines.

BOOKS: Local author (from Anacortes) William Dietrich will be making the rounds of local book stores, starting tonight at University Book Store. He'll be reading from his recent book, The Rosetta Key. The book sounds a little stressful, but full of Indiana Jones-style adventure.

Has immigration become the most divisive issue in America? If the battle brewing at the University of Washington over planned protests on the issue is any indication, we're leaning towards yes. An email from College Republicans is making the rounds at UW, announcing a planned game of "Find the Illegal Immigrant Tag" on the HUB lawn. The "game" is planned for Tuesday afternoon to call for the securing of American borders and a crack-down on illegal immigration.

"Protesting out of the rain" by Espressobuzz

It's L Ron Hubbard's birthday today. If you're looking for an opportunity and excuse to celebrate, look no further.

Pity poor Pluto. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified the celestial body as a dwarf planet. Along with being totally emasculating, the IAU's declaration meant that Pluto was stripped of its rights as a full-fledged planet, including health insurance (medical, vision, and dental), a sweet parking space, and a Platinum American Express card. Well, now Pluto is fighting back, or at least it's found a group to take up the cause:

Real Change is setting up camp at City Hall, to protest the city's handling of homelessness and new policies regarding homeless encampments. The planned protest is scheduled for March 13th, with Real Change encouraging supporters to "bring a tent and a friend" down to City Hall.

A few weeks ago, singer/raconteur Jenny Owen Youngs was in town, playing at the High Dive the same time as the Fremont Bridge was being closed evenings, which led to our arriving mid-set in a state of high dudgeon. We decided to skip a half-assed review, and afterwards fired off some impertinent questions via email. We just heard back, and as you'll see, Jenny schools us a bit. Now we adore her even more. If you buy her new album, Batten the Hatches, tell her we sent you.

The protests being staged at the port down in Olympia by the Port Militarization Resistance seem like a huge operation when you read the papers:

Last night was our first live encounter with Ohio's Over the Rhine, and the Triple Door turned out to be the perfect venue for the neo-cabaret sound of their new album The Trumpet Child (which they're streaming on their site). Tonight's show is sold out, but they're doing SRO sales at the window. The Triple Door website will tell you the show's at 8pm, but we showed up at 7:45pm last night and got sat during opener Griffin House's set.

Yesterday at about six o'clock in Westlake Center square there was a protest going on. Matching shirts, coordinated singing and sign stamping; it was the most together group we've seen demonstrating since...ever, probably. Westlake's mix of teenager hanger outers, office workers and shoppers gave them a wide berth, hanging out on the fringes as if gulping a huge breath of air before darting for the entrance to the mall. Don't look, don't acknowledge, don't--for god's sake--stop when one of them has you in their sights. Dammit, Lush is right there! Is there another entrance?

Jim Riches, Deputy Chief of the FDNY, is one of the producers of the Urban Legends video that questions the supposedly heroic actions of Mayor Giuliani on 9/11. Jen Carlson recently interviewed him for our sister site in New York.

We'd be there, but the man's keepin us down. Damn him. The man, that is. Damn the man.
