A reader writes: "$2 movies all week at the new Thornton Place cinemas by Northgate. And yet, almost all of the offerings are overpriced. (You'd have to pay me to see Pink Panther 2, for example.)" We found a Regal Cinemas press release that says the special $2 rate is good today, tomorrow, and Wednesday only. After that, you get a free popcorn and soft drink with paid admission, May 22-31. The Crest, of course, is showing $3 movies all the time.

TOP BRASS: The Rebirth Brass Band hails from New Orleans, and we're told by someone in the know that "they put on the most fun live show you will ever see in your life. EVAR." The 9-member ensemble features a trio of trumpets, two trombones, a saxophone, a tuba, a snare drum, and a bass drum. They're the only band on the bill and they're "playing all night"--which may not be hyperbole--so prepare to get brassed out.

Position 3 is the most anticipated city council race. It's an open seat, and that seems to be the only way to get new blood on the council.

Jean Godden used to write a column where she would point out humorous license plates, as well as the little things that make living in Seattle the silliest. Now she is on the city council and running for re-election. Her main opponent is weightlifting coach Joe Szwaja, who spent some time on the Madison City Council.

With the primary on August 21st we thought we would bore the general public and preview the races for City Council.

That's Derrick Carter on that scooter. Derrick Carter the house music legend. Derrick Carter, co-owner of Classic Music Company, one of the most acclaimed house music labels on the planet (and home to Seattle's Jacob London). The Derrick Carter that's been playing house music for more than two decades, starting at the age of nine with disco at family reunions. The one who still drops a perfect mix while barely able to stand; the one that's playing tonight at the War Room for the Gettin' ______* one-year anniversary party. He may play house music, but for being willing to be photographed looking that ridiculous, Derrick Carter is fucking metal.

The bar is set extraordinarily low for visual entertainment from DJs. Most opt to just mix tracks on two turntables, and while that (hopefully) sounds good, it's just doesn't have the same presence as a band. That's why showmen like Jamie Lidell or Jeremy Ellis and John Arnold are such breaths of fresh air, giving a crowd something to watch while providing the body with a rhythmic imperative. Tonight's Oscillate with Jeff Milligan should prove equally engaging, despite still being turntable-based in form.

We're a little reluctant to tell you about this, honestly, because we don't want any more competition for the good stuff, but we really are good folks at heart, so we'll let you in one of the absolute highlights of our year: tonight is the special Member's Preview of the Friends of the Seattle Public Library Book Sale at Magnuson Park. It runs all day Saturday and Sunday as well, and on Sunday things are half price, which, we'll get to prices in a minute.

Today is National High Five Day. No, really. Sure, it's a silly observation, but Seattle needs more occasions to not take itself so seriously.

There's nothing like a lack of information to build curiosity and suspense. Local label/collective Mass Mvmnt (read "Mass Movement") has taken that approach very much to heart, with only a trickle of information being released over the last year. The veil of secrecy is being removed tonight however, with a showcase at the War Room featuring almost their entire roster in celebration of new releases by FCS North and Time Promises Power.

It'd be nice to be able to say that the electronic music scene is able to avoid the trappings of the Seattle hipsteritis. You'd think that when most of your product is meant for dancing, that that's what a crowd will do. Hardly. Even with a healthy crowd, it takes a lot of time (and liquid courage) to get a crowd worked up, and that's usually "worked up" by Seattle standards, which implies a lot of people standing around on the dancefloor, drinks in hand. Occasionally a show will be able to transcend that, but those are pretty hard to predict. That said, based on past history, DJ Minx should be able to get the people movin'.

Thinking of the Red Bull Music Academy still puts a smile on Seattlest's face. While almost overwhelming with the amount of talent that came through, the fact that all of that great music came through Seattle is still mindblowing. The event left an impact on the scene too, with some people deciding to move to the area, and others ensuring that their tour plans bring them back through the Emerald City.

This weekend provides two opportunities for you to make purchases from the Seattle International Film Festival Group. On Saturday (10am-1pm) in the downstairs lobby of the Broadway Performance Hall, there's the annual Holiday Sale, where you can get "movie memorabilia, picturehouse paraphenalia, and sundry SIFF swag---all for beaucoup bargains." We interpret that to mean there will be film- and SIFF-related items for cheap. New this year: movie posters for sale as gift wrap. $5 gets you a roll of five random movie posters to use as wrapping paper. First off, we think this is a great idea for a unique way to wrap your gifts, and second, if there is a God in heaven, we will end up with some posters for The Pacifier. SIFF gift wrap is only available at the Holiday Sale, so your one shot to get it is tomorrow morning. Also, there will be free cookies.
