Each week the Seattle Office of Film + Music compiles its rankings of the top 10 Pacific Northwest albums of the week. The numbers are based on sales figures at Sonic Boom and Easy Street locations throughout Seattle. Here are the results for the week of December 8 through 14:
Seattle's Top Ten Local Albums of the Week
Can't Miss It: Monday
BOLERRRRRO!!: Pink Martini rocks our socks off. Covers, culture, coolness. What better setting to see them perform than the lovely Chateau Ste. Michelle? Get some wine, get a good seat, and relish the awesome.
Pink Martini Grows Up, Slows Down
The signature cuts on Pink Martini's four albums provide a pop-psych shorthand for our changing times. Sympathique (1997) had vocalist China Forbes singing "Je Ne Veux Pas Traviailler" (I don't want to work); Hang On Little Tomato (2004, halfway through the Bush years) had "Hang on, things will be alright." Hey Eugene (2007) asked impatiently "Are You There, Eugene?" And now Splendor in the Grass (2009) relaxes. "Let's...rest our heads upon the grass and listen to it grow."
Pink Martini Plays Benaroya Friday
Mixing infectious enthusiasm with world-weary self-awareness, Pink Martini comes to Seattle Friday (all the way from Portland), on tour for their latest album, Splendor in the Grass (taken from a line in the poem by Wordsworth, Intimations of Immortality). "Nothing can bring back the hour / Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower." Sigh.
Wineries Announce Summer Concert Series
Earlier this week, Maryhill Winery (located in Goldendale, WA, approximately 90 minutes east of Portland) announced their summer concert series, featuring the Counting Crows, Jackson Browne, and John Legend with India.Arie. Not to be outdone, Chateau Ste. Michelle announced their own concert series closer to home. They'll see your Jackson Browne and John Legend/Indie.Arie--they've got 'em on the schedule too--and raise you Tears for Fears, Bonnie Raitt, Pink Martini, Elvis Costello, and Diana Krall (on separate August weekends, for whatever reason). Tickets for all shows at both wineries go on sale this Saturday, April 25th.
Loud Music + Wild Animals = Good Times... Right?
WAMU Zoo Tunes recently announced their upcoming concert lineup. Personally, we say Meh -- but we're not every day listeners of The Mountain, so to be honest, we don't even recognize half the names on this list. Herbie Hancock would probably be great. The guy's a jazz legend after all.
