Great Canadian Beer Fest 2011
Northern Exposure: Seattle Brews at the Great Canadian Beer Fest
If you are a serious craft beer connoisseur, you're likely very familiar with the biggest beer event of the year: The Great American Beer Festival held in Denver, CO at the end of September. But, less talked about, yet heavily attended is our neighboring nations' equivalent: The Great Canadian Beer Festival. Not nearly as large, but equally awesome, the GCBF is held at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, BC. The event is a two-day beer bonanza kicking off on Friday (Sept. 9th) from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continuing on Saturday (Sept. 10th) from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. This will be the 18th year running for the beer fest and crowds of around 8,000 are to be expected to attend. Breweries from all over Canada and the United States will be featured -- 58 in total this year, five of which will be from our fair Emerald City.
Less Wine More Beer. Pike Old Bawdy Vertical Tasting Is 1/30
Seattle's history of lusty beer dates to pioneer days when the local population was made up primarily of men. Bawdy houses abounded and by the time naughty Nellie Curtis established the La Salle Hotel, this "city on the sound" reverberated with echoes of fun and frolic. The La Salle, where Pike Brewery was established in 1989, was the last of Seattle's infamous "bawdy houses." Pike's Old Bawdy Vertical Tasting is an annual toast to commemorate Nellie Curtis and her ladies of pleasure.
Drinking for a Cause: Beer First, Water Second
With a goal of supplying some of the poorest countries with clean water, strong health education, and water irrigation, Water 1st strives to help those less fortunate. However, the organization recognizes that we are a society that craves something unique, which is why they are organizing a festival of sorts.
Drinking this Weekend: Getting Naked, Green Flash, & Belgians
As far as we are concerned, L.A. can have our crappy, rain soaked weather. Instead of drowning your lawn you might consider drowning your liver. Some of the side-effects for this weekend include hangovers, muscle soreness, and oh yeah, supporting the victims in Haiti.
Getting a Beer Gut for X-Mas: A Craft Beer Pairing, Part Two
Today, although half gone, is Christmas Eve, and if you are one of the several million out there, you suffer from last-minute shopping rage. It didn't have to come to this, but then again, who said the holidays were easy. If you are one of the lucky ones standing in a kitchen, you have no doubt a snack fetish taking hold. Here are some helpful tips on what should be in that glass while sucking down another ranch-drenched baby carrot.
Getting a Beer Gut for X-Mas: A Craft Beer Pairing
Long forgotten, craft beer with it’s over 125 different styles has been a staple at the dinner table for centuries. Today for those in the know it’s a wonderful accent to those potatoes, ham, poultry, or even peanut brittle. In an abbreviated sort of 'advent calendar' we offer the first in a series dedicated to your temporary bowl full of jelly
Beer with the Rabbi: Hannukah, Food, and Beer, Part Two
As daytime slowly edges towards its temporary demise let's not forget its fast approaching day one of Chanukah. Already the thoughts beef brisket and latkes are in your mental gut and you’re ready for more. However, it's equally important to recognize what made eight days of light possible, oil. Tradition dictates that at some point during this celebration (after you put the latke down) you should head to the deep fryer. For now let's keep it simple with some gefilte fish and donuts, and maybe throw in a substitution here and there.
Beer with the Rabbi: Hannukah, Food, and Beer, Part One
Hanukkah starts at sundown tonight. For those of you without a history book or rabbi, that means 8 days of celebrating when the lights almost went out. During this time fellow Jews (and a few gentiles) get together partaking of latkas or livot (potato pancakes), gefilte fish, beef brisket, soofganiot (doughnuts), and various fried foods. However, it's not all about the oil, as some people have also taken to salads with oil and vinegar or dairy. In our first installment, we focus in traditional order, starting with starch and beef.
Thanksgiving Pairing Suggestion: Dessert Isn't Just a Meal
Filled with overeating, healthy conversation, and libations, Thanksgiving is truly an American tradition. In our final installment of beer and "the bird" we cover the second favorite entree: dessert. Besides consuming a nice lager, stout, or sour ale, one might consider contacting your local brewery for some spent grains. More will be mentioned on this, including a recipe for the real beer pancakes. Check out past entries on what to pair with turkey, and what to serve with your sides.
Thanksgiving Pairing Suggestion: Sides with a Pint
In terms of food, Thanksgiving is all about the bird. Side dishes are nothing more than filler, but they still stand up by themselves when one uses the right "brew." This week, we continue looking at the theme of beer with a helping of thanks.
Happy Beer Hour, Part Three
Cooper's Alehouse, Maple Leaf (Monday-Friday, 3 to 6 p.m.) $1 off pints and $2 dollar off all menu items combined with the bottomless bin of pretzels helps anyone regain their balance. Recognized in CAMRA's guide to good beer--there is no better endorsement than an alehouse mentioned by beer experts.

Washington Brew Fest
Seattlest feels the need to drown our sorrows, thanks in large part to the Dawgs' loss yesterday. Lucky for us the 3rd Annual Hops on Equinox - Spring Beer Festival is taking place today and tomorrow at he Fisher Pavilion on the Seattle Center campus (We'll excuse the fact that the Equinox actually took place five days ago). If you're a fan of the Fremont Oktoberfest, then you'll enjoy this event as well, as it's set up by the same folks.
