HIPHOP EXTRAVAGANZA: My, oh my, Seattle hiphop fans are in luck this weekend: the Blue Scholars are doing a stripped-down version of last year's The Program, with three nights at Neumos. This time, Common Market will join them every night; Truckasaurus and very special guests are playing on Saturday, Macklemore and Dyme Def will play on Monday night. Saturday's already sold out, but the second two nights are equally as awesome. Don't miss it. Really.
LIKE MOVIES FOR CHOCOLATE: Tonight is movie night at Theo Chocolate on Phinney, and--you'll never guess, we'll just tell you--they're showing Like Water for Chocolate. (Rotten Tomatoes says it's 89 percent fresh!) But it sounds a little different than a night at the megaplex: "We will be serving up hot chocolate, popcorn and other special surprises. Be sure to bring your own camping chair, or cushion to sit on, and snuggle up in front of the fire." Reservations are required: call 206-632-5100 to book your spot.
STRONG, WILY OL'D MAN: My! Oldominion, a legendary and superdope Northwest hiphop collective boasting members who happen to be some of our area's strongest and most creative artists, certainly has aged well. The group turns ten years old this year, and to celebrate, they're throwing a family reunion/party/show combo at Neumos this weekend. On the bill: The Saturday Knights, Grayskul, and assorted extremely important members of the crew. We're just saying, Oldominion knows how to party.
The recession, layoffs....What? I can't hear you, my Walkman's too loud! Tonight we're going to rewind to 1989 at the 90-minute dance jam known Dance Dance Party Party. Founded in 2006 by a couple New York City gals seeking the sweet spot between the health club and the dance club, DDPP has caught on around the nation with the simple credo: "No boys, no booze, no judgment."
TOP BRASS: The Rebirth Brass Band hails from New Orleans, and we're told by someone in the know that "they put on the most fun live show you will ever see in your life. EVAR." The 9-member ensemble features a trio of trumpets, two trombones, a saxophone, a tuba, a snare drum, and a bass drum. They're the only band on the bill and they're "playing all night"--which may not be hyperbole--so prepare to get brassed out.
This dusting, this light haze? We laugh at your puny snowfall, Seattle! We are mighty, we are determined, we are not dissuaded from commerce (or from pleasure, for that matter) just because some of the streets are slippery. So say the folks at BizXchange, anyway. They were planning on holding their holiday party tonight for members--it's a barter and exchange program--at Herban Feast in SoDo. With the snow and all, and so many events getting canceled, they decided to open the doors to all business owners and managers. Complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres from 6 to 11 tonight, in a terrific space (3200 First Ave. S.). So drive carefully and come on down.
JUST LIKE CLOCKWORK: This is your best bet for smooth grooving local hiphop this weekend. Clockwork probably make you very happy, but Macklemore is guaranteed to do so; his live show is unstoppably entertaining and his songs are both thoughtful and hilarious. This is his first show in town since July, people. Plus, XPerience might sing and Candidt might do "VooDoo." All of those prospects in combination are absolutely worth the rainy drive to Nectar.
That's right! Blogsgiving! We were up all night waiting for this. Who could sleep? In fact, we might leave right now, just to get there a little early and try out the pumpkin-flavored drinks. Quality assurance!
We're reminded (via Monica Guzman's Twitter feed) that the Obama inauguration is gonna be well-attended. Both Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell's offices have stopped taking ticket requests; Murray got over 6,000 potential takers for about 350 potential tickets. If you're not on someone's list already, you're probably out of luck. Is it too early for bars to start advertising inauguration parties? We think not.
Seattlest was at Democratic Party Headquarters on the fourth floor of the Westin last night, surrounded by all the festivities you probably saw on the news. We were a little surprised to see people attempting to cut in the booze lines, considering we were all Democrats, so no excuse for elitism.
To the hundreds--if not more--of people dancing, beating drums, cheering, waving signs and blocking traffic for hours on Capitol Hill's Broadway with us tonight: you are noisy and beautiful, you make this city beautiful, and reveling in Obama and Gregoire's wins would not have been nearly as joyous without you in the streets. To whomever brought fireworks: genius (okay, a little dangerous maybe, but genius). And to whomever brought their kids: you've given them a huge gift by letting them see a community at its most profoundly, honestly, loudly, and proudly celebratory. Holy shit! That just happened! UPDATE: KING5's footage of some of the partying.
We were at a pumpkin carving party on Sunday that featured, in a first for us, a jigsaw. Having seen it in action, we're believers. Artistic conceptions ranged from a Van Halen logo to a death star. And if you're not scared yet, please note that this picture is 666 pixels tall.
See that photo? That's sort of exactly like how much fun we have at Seattlest Happy Hour every month. We'll be pulling out the partay again one week from tonight. Mark your calendars and come join us. It all goes down at Moe Bar from 5-8 p.m. $2 PBR, $2 wells, other drink specials, and delights of all kinds. See you there!
Before last night's screening of SIFF's opening film Battle in Seattle, amidst all the self-congratulatory speeches, Mayor Nickels remarked that the 1999 WTO riots are "strongly rooted in the fabric of our city" and that every Seattleite would be well-served to have their feelings of the events "validated by an outside perspective." We'd be apt to agree---if only the outside perspective that followed wasn't such ham-handed dreck.
