Gallery: Of Montreal

Of Montreal’s performance on Wednesday night made us a believer in their live performances. Every song was a different act, holding vivid images that ranged from angel-like beings to mexican wrestlers, visions of gay rights protesters, to seeing a bride in full bridal regalia rejecting her fiancee in order to accept a marriage proposal from a mushroom-headed man. more ›

You Just Can't Prepare For Of Montreal

You Just Can't Prepare For Of Montreal

We can hardly contain our excitement for of Montreal’s show tonight at the Showbox Market. When we’re feeling down, we put these guys on the stereo and, magically, feel like we’re deep in a dream state. In a place filled with wild beats, varied instruments and Kevin Barnes’ awkward vocals. We’ve been excited to see them perform since the moment the Seattle stop on their tour was announced. After last year’s performance, our mouths and eyes were wide in awe and we anticipate another show just as exciting with more theater than concert. We’re definitely okay with that. Will we see more pigs and eye balls on stage? We sure hope so! more ›

Countdown in Photos: Day 12

Countdown in Photos: Day 12

Of Montreal performed at the beautiful Paramount Theater on October. Little did I know, their set would not be the highlight of my evening. Janelle Monae has a gorgeous sense of entertainment and showmanship. I was told by some friends that I have to get there early, not only to get shots of Miss Monae, but simply to see her perform. I'm glad I took their advice, it was so much fun. At one point she pulled out a canvas on a stand and began painting while she danced around and sang in a cape. If I might be so bold, I feel like she is the James Brown of our time. Not only does she have the pipes, but even at such a young age knows how to engage her audience. more ›

What a fantastic night of eye candy. Of Montreal did not disappoint, as a matter of fact, they were much more outlandish than expected. Complete with pig sacrifice, skeleton fights, and eyeball dragons, there's really no show like Of Montreal. Janelle Monae brought the funk and sass with her amazing voice and James Brown-style moves. Here's just a taste of the fantastical show, but if you want more then check out the Flickr collection. more ›

Weekend Music

Tonight's the all-ages Red Bull Big Tune Battle at Neumo's. It's a big hiphop competition (twelve producers are picked to compete, whittled down from the eighty who applied from all over the Northwest and even northern California), and the regional showdown for one of the only legit national beat battles. This year's featured guests are Detroit's Black Milk and Elzhi. more ›

Of Montreal's Theatrics Seemed Theatrical

Of Montreal's Theatrics Seemed Theatrical

Ditto what the Stranger said, unfortunately - This show did kinda suck. The crowd seemed really excited about The Blow, but they came out and delivered what was more of a staged representation of a high-energy show (complete with self-referential commentary: "This is the part where I do such and such!" Such and such occurs.) than an actual high-energy show. And when we say "they" we actually mean "she." The Blow is supposed to be a twosome: she kind of sing-shouting and looking all cute; he doing the beats. The people we watched the show with (hey guys, email) spoke highly of the CD and were severely disappointed by the deejay's no-show. Can't make it all the way up from PDX to open for of Montreal, dude? Of Montreal wasn't all that, it turns out, anyway. We left halfway through, so maybe it picked up after Seattlest and some of the other dead weight cleared out, but we doubt it. more ›

Of Montreal, Haggard Cover Band, Haggard; Lots of Show this Weekend

Of Montreal, Haggard Cover Band, Haggard; Lots of Show this Weekend

Seattlest is going to see a show tonight at the Showbox. It's Of Montreal which has been around forever, it seems, but is currently rising to the point that they're selling out the Showbox. It's also The Blow from Portland and Aqueduct from here. Of Montreal is a kind of guitar disco dirty pop thing - We've been listening to Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and we can see why tickets are available through Craigslist and not TicketsWest. They also have a weird schtick going on and have really wordy album titles (Horse & Elephant Eatery (No Elephants Allowed); Deflated Chime, Foals Slightly Flower Sibylline Responses) which we're usually suckers for. Despite it being about the music, of course. more ›

One Day Down, Two to Go

One Day Down, Two to Go

We were expecting the first day of Bumbershoot to be absolutely hellacious, what with the warm temps and the large crowds. Surprisingly, neither weather nor crowd size was *that* bad. As to the music: more ›

Isn't Bumbershoot Like Tomorrow?

Isn't Bumbershoot Like Tomorrow?

What a great way to close out the summer: Beer, fried food on stick, irritatingly large crowds, great music, and a slight chance of rain (remember last year?). Seattlest loves us some Bumbershoot though, and we wouldn't let some pesky weather ruin our fun. This year looks to be a good one. A couple things we are digging right off the bat are the addition of good bands on the outdoor stages and ditching the Friday festivities before the weekend (we never went on that day anyway). more ›

Isn't Bumbershoot In Like A Few Days (2)

Decisions, decisions. This member of Seattlest will have a good friend in town for the duration of Bumbershoot weekend, so most of our scheduling will depend on him. Good thing our friends tend to have taste. Present company excluded. more ›
