Office Nomads, the Capitol Hill rent-an-office-life purveyor, has gotten serious about getting looky-loos over the threshold. They're offering Pink Slip Scholarships for anyone recently laid off who has realized their basement office is sad and lonely, and a new Basic membership level for anyone who needs a few days a month to just get things done. There are two of the scholarships per month, which begin with a whole month free, and the Basic nets you three days for $50, plus drop-ins for $20. That sounds perfect for the coffee shop nomad who needs a few guaranteed "office" days for conference calls without the steamer wand snorkeling in the background.

Things are getting grimly humorous in the wake of layoffs that won't stop coming. A laid-off friend of ours was laughing about his job prospecting attempts resulting in people emailing him back, telling him they'd just learned their last day was coming up, and asking him if he knew of anything. Capitol Hill's Office Nomads is hoping to make a little pink slip lemonade out of this sudden boost in freelancers and newbie entrepreneurs. They want to pass their current 20-member peak in February, and they're offering a free month of daily drop-ins at their coworking space (desks, internet, fax, printer, conference room, kitchen) for new visitors with a pink slip or other proof of being laid off. Ex-Seattlester Charles Redell works out of there, so we can recommend them with confidence.
Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, you can join Seattlest (MvB) and CHS (jseattle) for a eye-opening talk about neighborhood and news blogs and online marketing. We're holding the big event at Office Nomads on Capitol Hill (invitation with RSVP right here). The workshop is sponsored by the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, begins at 9 a.m. (should be about 90 minutes with Q&A), and comes with a $5 suggested donation to the Chamber. We just went over the PowerPoint deck with jseattle, and boy is he good with maps and infographics. If you're curious about who the new neighborhood media are in Seattle or why to advertise with them, come by and enjoy a cup of coffee with us as we explain.
BOOZE AND SCHMOOZE: Michelle Goodman has written a book called My So-Called Freelance Life! (Full disclosure: this Seattlest let ourselves be interviewed for another book she wrote.) Tonight, she'll be reading from the book and providing folks with snacks and drinks, prizes, and an opportunity to network will fellow freelancers. Get thee to Office Nomads for the party/reading.
At least, we think this picture counts as evidence.
The e-mails were flying fast and furious late this morning at the virtual Seattlest HQ about the new Dick's fries, which made us start thinking about lunch, naturally. Although our stomach is strong and we can put just about anything in it without losing it later on, we tend to stay away from Dick's simply because we always feel like we need a shower afterwards. After a night of heavy drinking, their fries are welcome, but in the middle of a workday? Not so much.
