What do you get when you combine $300 million, Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld? Apparently a string of unusual commercials in which Seinfeld plays himself and Gates plays a what we can only hope is a caricature of himself. All set in a mall. (A mall? Couldn't find a Stuckey's or Tower Records to shoot in?) The first of what we can only imagine will be a relentless onslaught of Microsoft commercials featuring Seinfeld......

"Under Holmgren's Watch," by Seattlest Flickr contributor Bernzilla Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren made two major announcements today on the injury front, as the team prepares for his final season at the helm. Marcus Tubbs has been waived and Bobby Engram has an injury that will put him out for 6-8 weeks. Former first-round pick Tubbs was waived today, as the team appears to have given up on the oft-injured defensive tackle. He was attempting......

When the Seahawks face the Minnesota Vikings tonight in their first pre-season game (5:00 p.m. on KONG-TV, 710 AM, 97.3 FM) there will be a number of sub-plots to watch. Tonight marks the first night in nine seasons without Shaun Alexander on the sidelines (or in the game, if the stars were lined up). After cutting Alexander in the off-season, the Hawks are going with a back-field-by-committee approach that has brought real competition to......

Seahawks rookie defensive tackle Red Bryant injured his left knee at training camp this week, and will miss 4-5 weeks while recovering from arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage. Bryant, a fourth-round pick in this year's draft, had been performing well in camp, helping to shore up a perennial weakness in an otherwise stout Seahawk defense. Bryant is engaged to the daughter of Seahawk Ring of Honor member Jacob Green.......

Just in time for the first day of training camp, the Seahawks have signed first-round draft pick Lawrence Jackson to a 5-year, $11.25 million deal. The contract included a $6.1 million contribution to Jackson's tip jar, in the form of a signing bonus. Jackson, a defensive end from USC, signed the deal in time to begin practice earlier today. To avoid any confusion to the casual Seattle sports fan: This is LAWRENCE Jackson, the Seattle......

Been sitting on the Seahawks waiting list for 4 years, and need to settle that football jones? The Seahawks are holding their annual pre-season scrimmage at Qwest Field on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. Tickets are now on sale. Proceeds benefit local Play It Smart programs, a non-profit youth mentoring organization. Nationally, program participants are 20% more likely to graduate high school and 16% more likely to enter college.......

Former Seahawk linebacker Brian Bosworth reportedly rescued a woman from an overturned car outside Winnipeg on Saturday. Bosworth, a former #1 pick overall in the 1988 NFL draft, was in the area on a fishing trip and assisted rescue personnel at the scene. In 2004, ESPN called Bosworth's career the "6th worst flop of the last 25 years."......

Seahawks Pro-Bowl MLB Lofa Tatupu pled guilty today to a May 10 DUI charge and was sentenced to one day in jail by Kirkland Municipal Court Judge Michael Lambo. Tatupu was charged after speeding and driving erratically in a Hyundai after a late night on the Kirkland night club circuit. Two hours after his arrest, Tatupu's blood alcohol level tested at 0.155 and 0.158, nearly twice the legal limit. Tatupu will also pay $1,255 in......

NOT THE YANKEES: The Mariners, bless their hearts for trying, will take on the Red Sox tonight at Safeco Field. We weren't impressed with the one game we already saw this year, but we're willing to cheer on the home team tonight as they take on that East Coast team that's not the Yankees. 7:10 p.m. // Safeco Field // $7-73 BIG, BIG VOICE: British singer/songwriter Adele will be gracing the stage at the Triple......

Lofa Tatupu, the Seahawks three-time Pro-Bowl linebacker, was arrested this weekend in Kirkland for driving under the influence. Tatupu was pulled over for speeding and changing lanes without signaling. The officer on the scene reported that Tatupu smelled of alcohol though he claimed he hadn't been drinking. Tatupu refused a portable Blood Alcohol test after failing field sobriety tests. His car was impounded and he was brought into police custody where he submitted to......

Sports fans around the city are saying goodbye to Shaun Alexander. The former NFL MVP was released by the Seahawks following eight seasons. Now, we may be saying good-bye to Safeco Field. Liberty Mutual’s purchase of Safeco might mean a new name for the city’s baseball stadium. San Francisco’s baseball stadium opened up a few months after Safeco, and was originally named Pac Bell for the phone company Pacific Bell, a few years late......

The Seattle Seahawks announced this morning the signing of Northwest native and starting cornerback Marcus Trufant. The Wilson High (Tacoma) and Washington State University alum inked a long-term deal last night, according to the Seahawks, for $50.2 million over six years. Trufant was previously designated as the Seahawks' franchise player, which would have resulted in a one-year $9.5 million salary, but luckily a long-term deal was locked up. Even more impressive is Trufant's ability to......

In a press conference that's going on right now, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren announced that 2008 will be his final year as head coach of the Seahawks. Holmgren is not retiring. He did not rule out returning to coaching in the future, but did say he would "take a break." He said he would leave the issue of who would succeed him as coach up to the Seahawks front office, saying "it wouldn't be appropriate"......

Both the P-I and TNT report that Mike Holmgren will return as coach of the Seahawks. The P-I's Clare Farnsworth writes that "a source close to the situation" confirms that Holmgren will return. We say hooray! Holmgren is by far the most successful coach in team history. There are a few things we wish he'd do better, but when it comes to the big stuff--having the respect of his players, keeping his team motivated, and,......

Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News-Tribune reports that Mike Holmgren will announce whether he's going to remain as Seahawks coach, retire, or what, this afternoon. Over the weekend Hawks assistant coach Jim Mora withdrew his name from consideration for the Washington Redskins coaching job, despite being the 'Skins top candidate. This has led to speculation that Mora withdrew his name because he'd been promised Holmgren was retiring and that he'd get the Hawks job.......

It struck us halfway through Green Bay's 5th straight drive for a touchdown that Brett Favre's performance in this game was a lot like Roger Clemens' one-hit performance against the Mariners in the 2000 ALCS. When faced with a Hall-of-Famer at his best, what can you do? Favre was 18-23, throwing pinpoint pass after pinpoint pass: timing routes, hitting guys in stride, and, in the highlight that will come to represent this game, breaking out......

We've been reading and rereading Hawks/Packers stuff all week. Here the few things we think are important about Saturday's game: 1) The Hawks' Patrick Kerney made the Pro Bowl this year for terrorizing quarterbacks, but he may not be much of a factor in this game. The Packers gave up the fewest sacks of any NFL team--not because they have a terrific offensive line, but because they designed their offense that way. Brett Favre often......

No, he's gonna use what he's got to get just what he wants. Hey! Is there drama in Saturday's NFC divisional playoff game between the Hawks and Packers? Well, the playoffs are always dramatic. But this game packs (ha!) even more of a theatrical punch. The storylines: Conquering Hero Returns to Site of Greatest Triumphs: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren was once coach of Green Bay. He got the Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one--their first championship since the departure of legendary coach Vince Lombardi. There's a street named......

Not sure we've ever seen a win for which the credit belongs so overwhelmingly to the defense. For most of the game, the Seahawks' defensive line was able to get pressure with only four rushers. By establishing that, they were able to drop guys back into coverage, which led to the two pick sixes. The offense? The special teams? Not so great. But let's enjoy this one for now, shall we? Here's the scene at......

Expect the national TV broadcasters to rain clichés on the constant grey that is Seattle this weekend as the Seahawks host the Sean Taylor Memorial Experience at Qwest Field. It’s one thing to rip on Seattle’s weather from a heated broadcast booth, it’s another thing to have the stomach to actually handle it day in and day out. "I like the cold. I don't mind the rain. There's a certain hardness to it," Kerney said.......

Placekickers are held in low regard by their football teammates. No, that's too generous. Placekickers are held in no regard by their football teammates. Imagine if the Superfriends had a guy whose sole power was to instantaneously hard-boil eggs. Batman and Aquaman would, we suspect, have the same respect for "The Ovomaster" that NFL players do for their kicker teammates. But, Sunday, in the Seahawks' 30-23 win over the Bears, Seahawks kicker Josh Brown made......

After September's win over San Francisco, in which the Niners managed only nine first downs, we did a little capsule history over on our all-sports blog of the other times in Seahawk history when they'd held an opponent to less than ten first downs. It had only happened seven times before that game--the September game made it eight--and never twice in once season. Now the Hawks have done it twice in once season to the......

When we heard that Vern recently released a book called Seagalogy, we were perplexed. Why would the voice of badass cinema write a book about NFL cheerleaders? Then we noticed that it's not Sea Gal-ogy. Seagal. As in Steven Seagal. More badass, less hotpants-clad ass. To quote Vern's PR email: More than 5 years in the making, the new book SEAGALOGY by Vern is the first serious analysis of the films of Steven Seagal. Using......

A more dismal Northwest football weekend we can hardly remember. First, on Saturday afternoon--as NYC sportscaster Warner Wolf would say, "If you had Washington State and 45 points, you lost!" Oregon beat the Cougs 53-7, and the game wasn't as close as the final score indicates. The Cougs were down 40-0 at halftime. Lately the Seahawks' offense has been about as offensive as a Bastyr College commencement address. Against Pittsburgh on Sunday, they didn't score once (much like your average Bastyr College commencement speaker, unless we're talking about scoring weed). What's wrong? Well, it sure ain't the coach. Mike Holmgren has called the plays for four Super Bowl teams--as easy as it is to blame the coach, we can rule it out in this case. Thus, it's the......
