(via PubliCola) We were just reminded that French New Waver J-L Godard's tribute to The Big Sleep and sociocultural criticism, Made in the U.S.A., is half-price ($4.50) at the Northwest Film Forum tonight (7, 9 p.m.). Hard to say no to that, especially since you won't see it anywhere but in a theater. The New York Times--you wouldn't argue with an old gray lady, would you?--says, "Godard’s ultimate statement about his love/hate for the aesthetics/politics of American movies/life is an event to be savored and celebrated." (Mondays--if you were as unaware as we were until just minutes ago--are Happy Mondays at NWFF, and you can get tickets at the box office for half-price.)

If you were fidgeting during There Will Be Blood thinking, "GAH! This isn't obscure enough! Where are some old Finnish movies?" the Northwest Film Forum can help. As that is no more than two people, tops, and one lives in Finland, we're providing some friendly hype for their Finnish New Wave series.

We can guarantee that when you think of French New Wave cinema, a sultry feeling of cool washes over you. Suddenly, even if you can't name one French New Wave film, you're driven to wander forlornly down moodily lit city streets wondering where your lover has gone while an ultra-cool soundtrack plays in the background and your lover is trapped, desperately trying to reach you.

First things first: the Tegan and Sara show at the Triple Door tonight is sold out, but we did see a lot of SRO happening last night, so you might take your chances. Or simply show up at the Queen Anne Easy Street Records at 4pm today for their in-store appearance. Either way, they come highly recommended by us, and you might as well make plans to see them at the Showbox on December 3.

Another day, another great opening at the Northwest Film Forum. This time it's The Nomi Song, a documentary by Andrew Horn, opening tomorrow night. The subject of Horn's film is Klaus Nomi, an interesting dude, to make a vast understatement. Klaus wasn't "normal" by any means, and this film charts his journey from Berlin opera usher to androgynous robot/alien/New Wave cult icon.
