Everything! We wrote that to be glib, but then realized it's painfully true. Every day that passes, the prices seem to rise on everything imaginable—from groceries to gasoline. The cost is only going up. At midnight tonight, when a slew of new Washington laws go into effect, we can add several new items to the "more expensive than ever before" list.

Isn't it nice to be able to swerve down the road while gossiping on your phone? Don't you love driving behind texting teens at 70 mph across a floating bridge? Starting July 1st, that will be not just be inadvisable--it will be illegal. In just over two weeks, California and Washington will both enact laws that make it illegal to drive while talking on a handheld mobile phone. You will be able to talk and drive if you have a headset or other hands-free device. If you're caught talking or texting while driving, you could face a $101 ticket.

While we don't know if Mayor Greg Nickels' latest proposal to ban concealed weapons on city lands will ever become law (we imagine a little thing called the Constitution and this little group called the NRA might have some problems with that one), hundreds of new laws will take effect in Washington this Thursday.
