That Jenny Owen Youngs Has Sure Got A Mouth On Her, We Admit Respectfully

That Jenny Owen Youngs Has Sure Got A Mouth On Her, We Admit Respectfully

A few weeks ago, singer/raconteur Jenny Owen Youngs was in town, playing at the High Dive the same time as the Fremont Bridge was being closed evenings, which led to our arriving mid-set in a state of high dudgeon. We decided to skip a half-assed review, and afterwards fired off some impertinent questions via email. We just heard back, and as you'll see, Jenny schools us a bit. Now we adore her even more. If you buy her new album, Batten the Hatches, tell her we sent you. more ›

Memphis 125, Sonics 108

Memphis 125, Sonics 108

When you allow a team to reach the century mark in the 3rd quarter, you aren't going to win a lot of games. Unless you're the 1979-80 San Antonio Spurs. The Sonics did enough on offense to win tonight: Eight guys scored in double figures, led by Delonte West's 17. But on defense...oy. Stromile Swift (the one Swift in the NBA who doesn't bring shame on his surname) put 24 on the Sonics, with putbacks,... more ›

Curator Talks About "Willie Cole's Favorite Brands"

Curator Talks About "Willie Cole's Favorite Brands"

We finally made the (arduous!) four-block trek down to the Frye to check out "Anxious Objects: Willie Cole's Favorite Brands." The exhibit highlights the last 20 years of Cole's work, heavy on the mixed media sculptures he's famous for. Cole takes ratty, disposable, everyday domestic objects and transforms them into pristine pieces that mimic symbols from South Asian and African art: scorched ironing boards become Domestic Shields, detached gas pump nozzles arc up from the floor like vipers ready to strike, and hundreds of thrift store high-heeled shoes transform into masks and dragons and mandalas. Cole's understanding of the forms and symbols at work in African and South Asian art shines through everything; the shapes and styles he evokes are spot on, no matter the medium. We had no idea irons could be so sexy. more ›

WTC: Wasn't That Contemptible

WTC: Wasn't That Contemptible

We'll just come right out and say it: World Trade Center is not as bad as we expected. But then again, we thought it'd be baaaaad. Oliver Stone + Nicolas Cage + a weighty topic = a recipe for disaster. Seattlest went to a screening primarily to see just how bad it could be, but unexpectedly, we smirked a lot less in this film than in United 93. And that's even taking into account WTC's terrible youth-skewed marketing (the Coldplay-soundtracked TV ads and the movie's cringetastic profile on MySpace), as well as the conservative-baiting advertising care of the same PR group that swift-boated Kerry. more ›

Virtual Seattle Updates

Virtual Seattle Updates

We recently got an email from Bradford Bohonus over at VRSeattle that alerted us to the fact that he's updated the site with a new crop of that peculiar kind of wrap-around picture. The screen capture above of Cal Anderson park is not one of the new ones. We just really like that one. These are the new ones. more ›

Top Trails of 2005?

Top Trails of 2005?

Trails.com has released their "Top 100 Trails of 2005" list, with the first Washington entry coming in at 19th out on Cougar Mountain. We're not trying to cry over spilled trail mix here, but the list seems awfully biased towards eastern routes. Honestly, not a single trail from Utah, a state that boasts a record-setting 5 national parks? Similarly, nothing broke the top 100 from Montana, either. But there were 4 from New Jersey, and 12 (twelve!) from New York state, including the top spot. more ›

Next Floor: Housewares, Bedding, Geosynchronous Orbit

Seattlest's favorite local space elevator company got a straight-faced nod from the Post Intelligencer today in the form of an article in the business section of the paper. The LiftPort Group out of Bremerton is a group of companies working to build a carbon ribbon that will extend from an ocean platform up some 62,000 miles into space where a satellite will anchor it in orbit around the planet. An elevator car will lift materials and people up to the satellite at a fraction of the cost of today's rockets. That's the plan, anyway, and they project its achievement in 2018. more ›
