This American Life-r Sarah Vowell has written a new book, The Wordy Shipmates, which is the most readable history of New England Puritan thought you're likely to come across in your lifetime. It's a bit like reading the journal of a grad student who's doing their thesis on Puritan rhetoric--with all the marginal asides and musings left poignantly in. We emailed her a few questions, and she wrote back, double-spacing after periods, which extra space we edited out to save on pixels. If you have better questions, super-genius, she's in town on Monday, October 13, at Town Hall. Hie thee hence, why doncha.

John's band, in light of America's financial misfortunes, will be returning to the home-made recording studio to use our economic meltdown as inspiration for new songwriting material.

We would like to take a moment to thank this week's advertisers on Seattlest.

We're getting a new Major League Soccer team and everyone either is or should be excited. Drew Carey's walking around town, season tickets are flying off the shelves and the MLS Cup is approaching this weekend. On the field Houston faces New England, but there's sure to be a lot of talk during the broadcast about Seattle, our new team and the interesting ideas that have been associated with it. Unfortunately, no one in Seattle will see that broadcast. KOMO won't be showing it. A reader figured out it wasn't on KOMO's schedule and sent them an email. Here's what he got in return:

Here are three vaguely computer-related crimes taken from recent headlines in Seattle, Chicago and New England.

This fall we are combining our love of the football and our dream of learning to cook. On Sunday morning, following a trip to a local farmer's market/major supermarket chain, we will be preparing a meal from the city of the Seahawks opponent. Then at halftime we will throw our badly burned hands in the air and make hot dogs. Note: This weekend we are injured reserve, so trading in the visor and clipboard for some playing time is Seattlest Courtney.

Laser Rocket Arms hates it when we call them "the new Husker Don't."

Given Martin Scorsese’s gritty, wise guy oeuvre and a mega-talented cast fronted by fellow AFI Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jack Nicholson, we just couldn’t miss Scorsese’s retelling of the 2002 Hong Kong flick Infernal Affairs. (See the ad in the top right corner of the page? Don’t those faces, those colors and that “R” promise profanity, violence, and maybe even some sex? Hey!) So last Friday night—yeah, we’re a bit behind—we beat the devil to Ballard’s Majestic Bay half an hour early for the eight o’clock show … to find a hundred other people had beat us there. Good for Warner Bros. accountants, bad for our necks.

in a game, the Seahawks have finally managed to trade for New England's Deion Branch, a star wideout. He'll fill in nicely opposite Darrell Jackson, and has the ability to be the #1 receiver should Jackson's knee prove (more) troublesome.

Once again, we trucked it all the way across the West Seattle Bridge this week to check out the latest installment in the Four Sheep Acoustic Music Series at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.

A chance like this doesn’t come around very often. Jane Eaglen, world-famous and Seattle-favorite Wagnerian soprano, is giving a masterclass at UW this afternoon.

A couple of national heavies just blew through town to promote either side of our coming senate race and the most interesting things to come out of both visits was the dissent. Maria Cantwell got called out for the Iraq war votes that she's sticking to while she was sharing the stage with Barak Obama. John McCain's finest Seattle moment happened on the radio after his McGavick event. A caller asked about the shady background of a recently hired McCain senior aide to which McCain had no response. Rather, his response was that the guy in question worked for Bush in 2004. Oh yeah, that's clear evidence of a sterling character around Seattle.

Already riding the Hawks bandwagon? We'll give you two weeks of in-depth *football* coverage to impress your friends on game day. Note: that's *football* coverage, not coverage of which player's dad has an incurable disease or of Tim McGraw's game prediction.

Seattle is a perfect city to watch the Super Bowl in--the weather is always horrid, so there's no anxiety about spending the entire day inside, and the Seahawks are never playing, so there's no anxiety about the game itself.
