First Bears, Now Beavers Invade Ballard

From MyBallard comes a terrifying tale of strange new lifeforms on the back deck. "What is this strange animal?" asks a Ballard resident. "This guy showed up on our deck tonight on Seaview Ave. At first I thought it was a big rat and then thought it might be a nutria, but when I checked out information on nutria, it sounds like they are a lot bigger and have tails."

Speaking of Mike Davidson, the Seattle PostGlobe posse, and all-digital news platforms, tomorrow night is round two of No News Is Bad News: "Making It Work" (7-9 p.m., Bertha Landes Room, City Hall). The focus is on current and near-term models in the post-newspaper ecosystem, and Cory Bergman (MSNBC, LostRemote.com, MyBallard.com) moderates a panel that includes WSB's Tracy Record, Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo, Newsvine's Davidson, Instivate's Scott Durham, Seattle PostGlobe's Kerry Murakami, and InvestigationsWest's Rita Hibbard. It's the End of the News Hole as We Know It

We've now "observed" two future of news media via Twitter (the City Club and ONA events) and watched the Seattle City Council and "No News Is Bad News" events go down via their live stream (while eyeing the #nnbn Twitter channel). One caveat before we recap: what we've learned is mostly useless in practical terms.

MyBallard has the story: the woman's body was found around 10 a.m. this morning, "face down in the sand," and police say the cause of death is "suspicious." Identification was found nearby, so that news should follow. A woman out walking her dog on the Golden Gardens beach found the body. We really hate when life imitates CSI: Miami.

The son of former Seattle mayor Charles Royer is running for mayor himself, and that's straight from the HorsesAss. On the plus side, it looks like Jordan Royer is more together than mayor Nickels' son, Jake. West Seattle is sort of freaking out about the snow, while the Rainier Valley Post is freaking out for another reason: the Lakewood Seward Park Community Center is in danger of closing--there's a meeting about it Thursday. But where one door closes, a produce stand is poised to open. MyBallard reports that Top Banana should soon be back in business. And PhinneyWood has the 411 on how to find out when your bus will arrive.

Over at Capitol Hill Seattle they're going all i-team over the Howell airgun shooting. The Rainier Valley Post has got hints to where all the Valentine hearts are hidden in Hillman City. MyBallard has the pre-opening news on Green Go Food, "fast food with a conscience." And Publicola busts new HUDster and inveterate Twitterer Ron Sims for his faulty real estate prediction.

Amanda Knox is teary-eyed after her first day of testimony, and here in Seattle, we're a little worse for wear as well. Richard Branson blasted Boeing and threatened to take his bidness elsewhere. MyBallard is readying for the memorial for Kevin Black, the cyclist killed in an accident Wednesday. PhinneyWood has the deets on the senior center shakedown in which thieves stole three Gs accrued through spaghetti feeds and karaoke bingo.

A 39-year-old bicyclist collided with a van this morning on 24th Avenue near 65th, and died at Harborview later. MyBallard has the sad aftermath on the horrific accident, which came during the morning commute and left the cyclist pinned underneath the van. Let's be careful out there, people.

Neighborhood News And Local Blog Round-Up

  • A Central District woman got quite the hilarious scare yesterday morning when she spotted a silent smiling "intruder" while walking her puppy around the block. It turned out to be a life-size cut-out of GWB, stuck in neighborhood bush. But let's be honest, it would scare the bejeebus out of us too...especially in the dark!
  • MyBallard covers the proposed car camp for homeless residents in Ballard.
  • You've got just over two weeks to film and send in your submission for this years HUMP! We've gone the past three years and other than being unpleasantly surprised by a few familiar faces, we look forward to each year's entries.

  • Not to say that the rest of your day is going to be downhill from here, but here's the best news you'll read all day: Molly Moon's Ice Cream II to open on Capitol Hill. Thanks to Capitol Hill Seattle for making our day!
  • Blogging Georgetown updates a previous story on the Armed Citizens Brigade. Unsurprisingly, the interview subject cited's last name is Cheney.
  • An armed stand-off started at our neighborhood grocery store and we had no idea. Thank goodness for the Central District News.

  • The Central District News covered the ribbon cutting ceremony at our newly-remodeled alma mater, Garfield High School. Seeing that the remodel was desperately needed a decade ago when we were roaming the crowded halls, we say finally. But not so fast...classes start today and the final touches still don't seem to be finished.
  • Capitol Hill Seattle poses a very important question: who is the best bartender on Capitol Hill? Any nominations dear, drunk readers?

As of 11 p.m., the Coast Guard and rescue divers were still looking for a second missing swimmer. UPDATE: The search for the missing swimmer has been called off. A recovery effort has begun to locate the missing swimmer's body.

Seattlest Abbey is still recovering from a waterlogged Radiohead show, so we apologize for your morning news delay. We're going to let her sleep in, even if we're still jealous we didn't get to go. Happy morning news! ~Your Editor

  • My Ballard brought the best news we read all Monday, reporting that Cuban sandwich savior Paseo, is opening another location today. We have to admit to having dreamed of Paseo's sandwiches (they are that good), so news of a second location is like Christmas in August.
  • The Big Blog gives you the 411 on Obama's VP. If you want to be the first on your block to know who Barack's running mate will be, sign up to be notified by text message. We can see it now--"OMG Guys! It's totes Joe Biden!!"
  • Capitol Hill Seattle shares two uber-helpful bus maps of Capitol Hill, courtesy of a contributor named Uncle Vinny. Thanks Uncle Vinny!

By now the word has probably reached you that Robin Williams, he of Mrs. Doubtfire and The Bird Cage fame, is in Seattle to shoot footage for a film. MyBallard took some extra bloggerly initiative and shot some of their own footage of the man! (And then got politely ejected from the set.) Check out their photos and story about the encounter, including details about a dog, a French fry, and where Williams will be tomorrow. Thanks for braving the elements, MyBallard!

Earlier this week, as MyBallard noted, King County Metro reported that Seattle bus ridership in the first three months of 2008 is six percent higher than the same period last year, which we think is great. The more of us on buses, the less of us driving.
