How Will Musical Lovers Ever Sleep at Night?
Bad news for lovers of bad musicals--Playbill reports that noted author-composer-librettist Leslie Bricusse has dropped out of the creative team working to bring a musical version of the 1993 Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan vehicle to the stage. Whether this will delay the musical's release is unknown; the original film featured numerous Seattle location shots, including Alki, Lake Union, and a luxury suite at the historic Sorrento Hotel.
For Every Door He Closes...
Somewhere, God opens a window. That is one of the many lessons we take from Sound of Music, at any rate, and so we are not terribly shocked to hear that if you suffer from the Devil's grip (and here we're referring to migraines), at least you are at a significantly decreased risk for breast cancer. Apart from the connection granted by the grace of God, the link between migraines and breast cancer turns out to be somewhat more substantive than the average non-scientist might guess; both conditions are related to estrogen levels. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, over in South Lake Union, released the study this week. God and Fred Hutch ask you to please, migraines or no, keep getting those yearly mammograms if you're over the age of 40 and have boobs.
A Chorus Line Is Still the Best Musical Ever
When Seattlest was a little girl, our mother rented the film version of A Chorus Line and, in that single theatrical moment, we were transported from little girl-dom straight to an imaginary world where we would grow up to be a chorus girl. As a young dancer, we saw a couple of different productions of the musical, and were always impressed with the athletic, highly demanding choreography. We were intimidated just watching it, imagining ourself growing up to head out to auditions where such incredibly dexterous moves would be demanded of us.
Avenue Q Was Better Than Expected
By the time we made it to the Paramount for Avenue Q's opening night last night, just about everyone we know had told us how much we were going to love it. That's a high bar our friends and family set for this show. Now we know it's because they knew it could deliver.
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
FULL PUPPET NUDITY: You might have noticed that big banner on the side of the Paramount advertising puppet cleavage Avenue Q. Well, tonight is opening night, so if you haven't gotten your tickets for this ever-so-brief run of the Tony Award-winning show, now's your time. Seattlest will be there tonight for the kick-off, but then it's up to you to get out and see those puppets sing and swear all over the place.
Life of Bruce Lee to Become Broadway Musical
If this announcement had come on April Fool's Day, we'd have thought they went a little overboard with the prank. A Broadway musical about the life of Bruce Lee and his journey to martial arts and movie stardom? Apparently so. Today, Elephant Eye Theatrical announced their latest musical Bruce Lee: Journey to the West, which is scheduled to debut sometime during the 2010-11 season.
Get Out: Avenue Q Unveiling Today at Lunch
Avenue Q is going to be hitting the Paramount this summer, and word on the street is that the banner they'll be hanging on the theater is simply scandalous.
Seattlest Night at SIFF Cinema Saturday: West Side Story
Who doesn't love West Side Story? Communists? Nihilists? Secret Muslims? With Stephen Sondheim's lyrics, Leonard Bernstein's score, and Jerome Robbins' fabulous choreography, the end result is one of the greatest musicals ever brought to big screen. A new 35mm print of West Side Story is showing this Saturday at SIFF Cinema as part of their United Artists 90th Anniversary film series.
We Review: Whistle Down the Wind @ the 5th Avenue
We enjoyed ourselves immensely because we love basketball.
Our Two-Year-Old Nephew Attends Go, Diego, Go LIVE
Being born about three decades too late early to appreciate Go, Diego, Go LIVE: The Great Jaguar Rescue, a musical based on the TV show of the same name, we sent our two-year-old nephew.
