This is the big Sunday finale gallery. We're tossing in Gayngs (whom to our delight shares a lead singer with Sean Na Na and Har Mar Superstar), Das Racist, Fitz and the Tantrums, Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips into the mix. Now that's a hell of mix and made for one incredible Sunday. For those of you that were there, I'm betting you remember the feeling of fatigue that was beginning to seep in and you really just wanted to take a nap. Then you realized that Fitz was playing or that Flaming Lips was coming on the main stage at sunset. So you tossed back a Five Hour Energy and felt your eighth wind coming on.
Sasquatch Gallery: Mega Sunday Roundup
Sasquatch Gallery: Sneak Peek Day 3
Ok, I'll be honest with you... we're feeling the fourth-day wearies from so much hard rocking and running up and down to the mainstage twenty times a day. That's pushing it, but you feel me.
It's Official, Sasquatch Has a Lineup. Huzzah!
The lineup for Sasquatch 2011 is out, announced last night at a special performance at the Showbox. The big names include The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse and, of course, the Foo Fighters.
Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition Sept. 4-7
GAMES (AND THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE/PLAY THEM): If you're a gamer, then you've already planned to spend your entire weekend around the convention center for the Penny Arcade Expo. What better way to spend the last days of summer than indoors playing the latest and upcoming games, talking to developers and hearing gamer-friendly music? It's officially sold out, but it never hurts to try. If that doesn't work, there's always PAX East in March. Convention Center, Friday-Sunday.
Bimbo's Gets a Rolling Stone Shout-Out
In this week's Rolling Stone, the annual "Hot Issue" (and yes, the one with Britney on the cover), working at the Cha's Cha's burrito kitchen gets blurbed as a "Hot Rocker Job." Citing the "kitchen staff of insanely talented musicians moonlighting as line cooks," there are a couple quotes from a certain former employee/maybe bland Fleet Foxes frontman, along with a list of other groups associated with Bimbo's: Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, the Melvins, Hole, Minus the Bear, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and Murder City Devils. So now you know which bands gave you food poisoning.
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup By Day
Right on the heels of the announcement that the Mars Volta was added to the Sasquatch lineup, and right before tickets go on sale this Saturday, the three-day music festival has seen fit to delineate who will be playing on which day:
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup Announced
After months of wild speculation, the official 2008 Sasquatch lineup has finally been announced:
Last Listen at Sonic Boom Fremont
Seattlest has always felt odd using the listening stations in music stores. We love 'em and--the purchased and downloaded ringtones of strangers on the bus not withstanding--still feel that they're the best way to check out new music. It's just kind of weird rocking out in a store with the cans on while other people around you browse the shelves, blissfully unaware of the epiphany you're having, or that in some small but significant way your life is changing. Good weird, but still weird.
Get Out: Hey Girl! @ On the Boards, thru Sunday
We went in to , the performance piece by Italian experimental theatre troupe Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, at On the Boards last night with high expectations. We'd be dishonest if we didn't admit we were somewhat disappointed, but we still recommend the show highly. After all, it features some of the greatest stage magic we've ever seen, with effects and images that stick with you longer than the inkling you have while watching that, thematically, this isn't nearly as clever as the effects.
Get Out Saturday: Download Festival
What is the Download Festival? First and foremost, it's a music festival consisting of eight bands on two stages. Now in its fifth year, Download 2007 will be happening in Boston, Chicago, San Fransisco and here, at our own Gorge Amphitheatre. Tickets are $60.
Baby Einstein: Better for Your Kid than Cigarettes!
The Columbia Journalism Review has our number. It's not actually true that Baby Einstein videos "suck the vocabulary out of your kid's brain." Wea culpa.
It's Tea-time for Indie Rockers
Friday night Seattlest headed to Neumos for the sold out Silversun Pickups show and Sunday we headed to the Paramount for the sold out Modest Mouse show (the latter courtesy of the ticket provided by Seattle Metblogs - thanks!). Ordinarily we'd split the reviews into separate posts but in this case the same lesson applies to each band so we've opted to combine them.
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
It seems like, all across the network, folks were up to no good. Maybe it was all the green beer from last weekend...
Why, Modest Mouse? WHY?
Float On. Great song. Really like it. And now American Idol, in collusion with Ford and, presumably, Modest Mouse, has ruined it.
All The News
--Putting random stuff in brackets and voting on it is all the rage. First the blog thing, and now gay clubs go head to head. Stay tuned next week when Seattlest pits our socks against each other in a bracket from hell.
Hip-Hop Champagne Wars. Who Knew?
Seattlest likes our champagne, and after perusing this article in the latest Fast Company Magazine, we just couldn't resist. The world of hip hop seems to be hell-bent on promoting everything from cars, clothes, and energy drinks. It was only inevitable that French champagne was next. After Jay Z had a falling out with "hip hop champagne juggernaut" Cristal over some racist comments, rap stars have been looking for alternatives - many in the form of their very own wine companies. Seems these brands are finally figuring out that hip hop really does have a big effect on revenue generation. After Busta Rhymes released his hit "Pass the Courvoisier" in 2001, the company saw a 30% increase in sales. Did you know there are even companies out there tracking the word counts on rap songs to pick out key brand names? Are indie bands ready to follow this trend? We doubt Modest Mouse Merlot is ready for the shelves anytime soon; but if the recent rash of car cross-promotion and One Tree Hill episodes are any indication, who knows....
Aural Pleasures
A: A night in Seattle, having some drinks, and listening to live music that doesn't blow ass.
Danielson at Chop Suey A Few Nights Ago
Danielson took the stage around 11:30. The crowd steadily filed in from their twenty-minute smoke breaks. Ben Gibbard of Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie fame showed up following the opening band.more ›
A Weekend of Music
Apparently, there is something out there called 'nature.' It has trees and birds and such things. We are a little scared of it. If you, on the other hand, are more intrepid than we are and you also happen to enjoy the indie rock, head over to the Gorge Amphitheater tomorrow to see the Sasquatch Music Festival. As you most likely know, the lineup features the Pixies, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Kanye West, the Dears, Arcade Fire, the Bloc Party and more. The lineup is awesome, but we are a little biased towards ceilings, walls and climate control, but that's just us.
Rappers and Sisters and Wolves, Oh My
Sure, Modest Mouse is sold out. Bob Dylan is sold out (though for the life of us we can't understand why). If you are, however, looking for live music this evening, your best bet is KRS-One at Chop Suey. He was a member of the legendary Boogie Down Productions, which despite its embarrassing name was one of the most important hip-hop bands of the 80s (you know, the decade that VH1 likes to have shows about). He is a master of thoughtful and substanative rhymes about politics, race and culture. Really, he is the "anti-Nelly," and we can think of no better endorsement of a musician out there then being the "anti-Nelly."
Sold-Out-a-Thon @ The Showbox
Today is Day One of the Modest Mouse Sold-Out-a-Thon (and you can interpret that title however you want) at the Showbox. For the very eager and very commited there's a potential four days of MM and openers Mason Jennings, Headphones, and The Thermals in store for you. The masses that couldn't get it together in time to purchase a ticket or a four-day pass are left to sort through the leavings at Craigslist and, no doubt, overpay.
