At long last, Miranda July's film, The Future, is finally making its way to the West Coast! Before you see the movie this weekend, read Jenise's interview with the Jane-of-all-trades. more ›

This Week At SIFF: Miranda July, Trolls, The New York Times and Bruce Lee

The opening ceremonies have come and gone, and between the films and the parties, SIFF has shown us a great time this weekend. But it's time to get down to business. Today marks the start of the first full week of the festival, so I hope you've done your stretches. This is what we're looking forward to in the coming week. more ›

Sarah's SIFF 2011 Picks

Sarah's SIFF 2011 Picks

It's easy to forget how overwhelming SIFF is. But with 441 films from 74 countries, it's easy to fall into a black hole of trailers, directors and descriptions, spending hours and hours poring through that year's lineup--in some cases, even more time then you will actually spend attending the festival. We hope that these picks will help as you wade through this year's cavalcade of solid choices. more ›

Monday @ Bumbershoot: The Music Alternative Edition

Monday @ Bumbershoot: The Music Alternative Edition

As we were saying, there's a lot more at Bumbershoot besides the music. You've got the comedy, the literature, the theatre, the dance -- and the people-watching, the sideshows, the side sideshows: yesterday we ran into Craig and Victoria doing a violin-and-flamenco act behind a tent; they say they'll be back today, roaming around, so look for a swirl of red. more ›

Miranda July, of Portland, has two pieces; one a short story called "Roy Spivey" and the other a recollection of summer movies called "Atlanta." It starts: more ›

DIY Films Not Involving T&A

DIY Films Not Involving T&A

We're sure everyone and their mother are hard at work (pun fully intended) on homemade porn for the Stranger, but there's another amateur movie contest going on in town, and its deadline is already looming. The Northwest Film Forum is presenting the 8th Annual Local Sightings Film Festival this October, but entries must be postmarked by July 25th in order to be eligible. This gives you a little over one week to get your feature-length (>50 min.) or short film (<50 min.) shot, edited, and mailed off. We're sure that's more than enough time for any future Miranda July or Craig Brewer to create a masterwork. Check out the criteria here, as well as the submission form (there's no entry fee). If you've got some movie-making ideas but are lacking the means to do so, you're in luck: the NWFF rents cameras, sound and lighting gear, and editing equipment. So get to it! more ›
