I didn't really start heading out to local (or even non-local) shows until a little over a year ago. I mean I had casually gone to about 5 shows a year and headed out to almost every local venue in the city, but nothing like what I manage now. Even in the old days, I had a few favorite local bands and one of them was Menomena.
Countdown in photos: Day 28
Showbox Rocked Friday: Menomena Showed Us How It's Done
The band may have taken some time off for other projects, but they didn't skip a beat at Friday night's show. The entire room was filled with the voices of fans singing along to new and old songs alike. Man, did Seattle miss them...and holy crap are we excited that they're back. Tu Fawning will now join them for a majority of their tour, but for the Seattle show Say Hi filled the middle band shoes. We enjoyed the set, but aren't sure it held up to some of the hype we've been hearing around town.
Menomena, Say Hi, and Suckers @ the Showbox Tonight!
Suckers are a Brooklyn based band that has an odd mixture of synth keyboard, 80's rock, electronica, and a dash of Modest Mouse. From what we've heard, we're looking forward to catching their live show. It promises to be interesting at worst, and wiggle-your-butt fun at best. They toured with Local Natives this summer and have started a modest, but growing, fanbase. It's almost as if Brent Knopf misses his other band, Ramona Falls, so much he's filling the void with Suckers. We're ok with it... for now.
BOAT: A Best Bet at the Croc Tonight
Here at Seattlest, we’ve always been big fans of local purveyors of goofy indie rock, BOAT. With their latest album scheduled to be released on Magic Marker records on October 27, we’ve been delighted to see they’ve been added quite a few PacNW dates to their schedule.
Capitol Hill Block Party in Brief, Les Savy Fav in Briefs
Head Like a Kite: By the time we got into Neumos, we'd unfortunately missed most of their set. Whatever they were playing when we walked in, it was awesome and everyone was into it. It wasn't long, however, before they went into show-closing mode with more ethereal, experimental jam stuff. We dig Head Like a Kite, but they also bore us sometimes.
Capitol Hill Block Party: Seattlest On The Scene
We're sitting in Moe Bar, and the key word there is "sitting." After four different bands we needed to rest our sandaled feet, and so we retreated from the steadily darkening, crowded intersection of the Block Party. No photos to share (yet) but here's what we've seen so far!
Seattlest Picks for the Capitol Hill Block Party
Friday: Catch Common Market (4:30) and U.S.E. (5:30) at the main stage, then skip over to King Cobra for the second half of Truckasaurus (6:00). Take a dinner break (may we suggest eating something protein-heavy?), then get yerself to Neumo's for Thee Emergency at 7:45. After that, we suggest Das Llamas (it's their last set...THEIR LAST ONE!) at 9:45 at the Cha Cha. To round out the night, buy yourself a fancy rum drink at Havana and party until the wee hours with DJ Curtis.
Last Chance for Menomena Tix!
Portland experimental rockers Menomena are coming to Neumos this Friday with openers All Smiles and Grand Archives.
Win Menomena Tix
Portland's electro post-rock outfit Menomena is known for both their abstract pop hooks and digital loops. They'll be breaking out the guitars, keyboard, organ, drums, saxomophones, glockenspiel, and multi-part harmonies for their upcoming show at Neumo's this weekend. Stream their latest album, the exceedingly well-reviewed Friend or Foe, here. And fill out the entry form below for your chance to win a pair of tickets to Saturday's Friday's show, as well as a copy of the aforementioned album and a totally bitchin' poster. Considering Saturday Friday night's event also includes openers the post-Grandaddy solo effort All Smiles and mega up-and-comers Grand Archives, this is a show you can't afford to miss. We'll be drawing the name of one winner Thursday at noon.
Seattle Listens
There' a constant ebb and flow when it comes to the music we love. Sometimes it seems like there's just nothing interesting out there. Nothing to light us up when we listen at home, in our car or on the bus, eyes closed. And then sometimes we find ourselves hauling fist-fulls of new music to the counter of our favorite record store.
Menomena? More Like Me-ROCK-mena
After spending all day yesterday leading up to the Menomena show at the Croc singing the Muppets' menah-menah doo doo da doo doo song in our heads, we were stoked to have a band that sounds exactly like Radiohead buzzing in our ears. Or, as it were, buzzing all over our bodies. (We were standing dangerously close to the speakers.)
