Memorial Day weekend is finally behind us, so it's time to settle into SIFF. Yes, it's absolutely lovely outside, but Seattleites can only handle so much sun. Get away from all that UVA/UVB exposure and spend your time in the theaters' comfortable darkness.

Kurt Vonnegut, up there with Twain and Melville and Kesey as the most original American novelists ever in the history of writing stuff, died tonight. He was 84. He'd been in the hospital since a fall a couple of weeks ago. Attention kids: this is what happens if you chain-smoke for 73 years.

It's been business as usual since the day after the storm in some Seattle neighborhoods. We eat, we drink, we Christmas shop, we gather all the shingles from the street and life goes on. Meanwhile, the Eastside continues to live red in tooth and claw. It's still mostly dark over there and crowds await Mel Gibson's next gasoline delivery at each service station. Hopefully it'll drive home how much energy it takes to power a 4000 square foot mcmansion full of today's technological wonders when someone's got to wait in line for gasoline to feed the generators. Hey, Eastside, maybe if you didn't try to cheap out of your property taxes by living near the city instead of inside of it you wouldn't be in this mess right now. Something you might want to think about next time the socialist tax collector comes around.

Breaking the law, breaking the law We -ist folks love us some crime, and no misdemeanor is too petty for a post on any of our sites. This week, join us for a rogues' gallery of miscreants major, minor, and alleged.

The Boston Globe's Jeff Jacoby is disturbed by a disparity in the national media's treatment of Mel Gibson's liquored-up anti-semitic rantings versus Naveed Haq's shooting spree at the Jewish Federation:

Unless you've spent the past week submersed in the Mariana Trench, you know that the intoxicated driver in Incident A was Hollywood's Mel Gibson, who railed at a Los Angeles County police officer about the "[expletive] Jews" and how "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." The story was soon everywhere. In the first six days after his arrest, the media database Nexis logged 888 stories mentioning "Mel Gibson" and "Jews." And that didn't include the countless websites, talk shows, and smaller publications that also took it up.

This year St. George's Day falls on a Sunday, so chances are you’ll be attending a party tonight or Saturday. The question then becomes how will you celebrate the actual holiday? Simple. Dine on an English meal.

It's Easter weekend, which brings back memories of being late for church and having to sit in the narthex, and dressing up. Also, ham. But most of all, easter egg hunts! What if there were a city-wide easter egg hunt! Wouldn't that be great? Probably not, but in this week's Stalk, Seattlest tells you where we'd hide the eggs if there were.

Seattlest made it to the opening night of the new Negativland show at Consolidated Works Friday, February 17th. The email invite promised "wine and hors d'oeuvres," but all we could find were these tiny nut bowls of asian cracker mix with wasabi peas (yuck), and the wine was sparkling white (blech), but it was free so who's complaining?

We're only going to say this once: Say Anything... is the best Hollywood romance since Casa-frickin'-blanca. (Or Notorious!, which has a harder title to frick up.) It does for Seattle in the '80s what Bogie's film did for Vichy-held Morocco: makes it look like the coolest place on earth to be hopelessly in love.
