BOOKS: Local author (from Anacortes) William Dietrich will be making the rounds of local book stores, starting tonight at University Book Store. He'll be reading from his recent book, The Rosetta Key. The book sounds a little stressful, but full of Indiana Jones-style adventure.
Can't Miss It: Thursday
Seattle Longshoremen Walk Off the Job to Protest War
Longshoremen at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are conducting a walk-out today to protest U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite warnings from a Union arbitrator that all longshoremen must report to work on Thursday, reports from the Port of Seattle say that only a handful of workers showed up for their scheduled shifts. Officials from the Port of Tacoma say that virtually all of their workers failed to report to work this morning.
Good Day to Walk Off Your Job and Join a Demonstration
Expect a four-mile progression of mostly immigrant workers and the blue-collar citizens who love them. It's nothing new for immigrants (legal and illegal) to be the ones fighting for labor rights in this country. Indeed, they were a huge part of what we'll call the labor movement heyday now about a century ago.
Primero De Mayo Marching All Over Your Commute
You can don your black sweater and black jeans and join the march today, or you can get your ass out of downtown early. We suggest you do one of those, though. People are supposed to congregate at Judkins Park at 4:30pm and we've marked out the route from there out above. Over on Jackson, up on 4th, over on Pike or Union and down on 2nd to the Federal Building.
