While a number of Halloween themed productions are extending their theme to serve as anti-Holiday programming, before that sort of thing become absolutely the norm, this week sees a number of fringe companies vying for your artistic attention spans with a variety of off-kilter wares.
This Week In Theater: Dance, Diversions & Deconstructions
Manifold Motion's Under Interesting, but Lacking Depth
There was a moment during Manifold Motion’s new show, Under, when we suddenly glimpsed its unrealized potential. It was in the third act of the immersive installation performance, and we were drowsy from the smell of dirt, which had been spread thickly across the dance floor. A dancer entered through the doorway, her body held at a peculiar angle. Hoisting her doily-splattered parasol high, she advanced in slow jerks, her hips thrust forward, her hoop skirt swaying. The soundscore droned in the background. Briefly, in this moment, we were held captive by this triad of sight and sound and smell, fully drawn into Under.
New Aerial Yoga Workshop Drops This Month
Again comes the behemoth of New Year’s resolutions to "get in shape," which is a relative phrase. In the case of those who’d like to expand the range of their fitness routine, we’d certainly recommend the new Aerial Yoga class offered by Bridget Gunning of Manifold Motion.
Manifold Motion's Miscellenea II Wraps Up Tonight
Tonight is the last chance to catch Manifold Motion's Miscellenea II program, presented at the Canoe Social Club in the International District. To sum up: Manifold Motion is a company - helmed by Artistic Director Keely Isaak Meehan - that produces work by collaborating interdisciplinary artists. The Miscellanea programs are an extension of Manifold Motion's normal productions, an opportunity for Manifold to further support their collaborators by giving them additional exposure and a platform to present new work.
OMG! Manifold Motion is Awesome!
Manifold Motion's ability to work magic with yarn puts to shame all the stitchin', bitchin' hipsters whose facility with knitting needles has never exceeded the ability to make scarves. Part meditation on our hyper-mediated culture, part paean to the arts and crafts movement, Manifold Motion's is a stunningly imaginative dance performance that's more than worth the drive to West Seattle.
