Reefer Madness: the Musical @ Live Girls Theater

parody of a musical in the first place, with enough cheesy lines, bawdy humor and exposed flesh to sate more or less any appetite. more ›

Rainier Cold Storage Stock House, RIP

Rainier Cold Storage Stock House, RIP

There's a nice little piece over at Crosscut this morning about Georgetown's Rainier Cold Storage Stock House (and the demise of), but just like the neighborhood opposition to the building's demolition, it's too little too late. To be fair, the building's owners broke their way through many walls (a much beloved building that defines a neighborhood, an official Seattle Landmark) with the wrecking ball of public safety: it's going to collapse onto Airport Way, they said. Demolish away, they were told. Demolish away they did and not enough people knew or cared beforehand to do much of anything to stop it. more ›

WaMu's Default Risk Soars After Cuomo Files Suit

Meanwhile, over on the New York Attorney General's site, Andrew Cuomo is impersonating a pitbull, if pitbulls knew how to file subpoenas:

“In order to fulfill their duty to consumers and investors, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac must ensure that Washington Mutual’s mortgages have not been corrupted by inflated appraisals,” said Attorney General Cuomo. “Our expanding investigation into the mortgage industry has uncovered that Washington Mutual improperly pressured appraisers to provide inflated values that best served the lender’s interest. Knowing this, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac cannot afford to continue buying Washington Mutual mortgages unless they are sure these loans are based on reliable and independent appraisals.”
David Schneider, president of Washington Mutual's home-loan division, responded by saying, "We take accusations such as these very seriously," via cell phone from a white Bronco on I-5. more ›

Georgetown Needs You

This weekend Seattlest was standing outside of Jules Maes in Georgetown trying to explain to someone which part, exactly, of the Rainier Cold Storage compound across the street was about to be torn down. It's the Stock House which is north of here a bit--it's, uh...no. Ok, it's down there near the...no. Not thirty feet from us and directly across the street there's a sign that says "Stock House." Yep, that's it. more ›

Weekend Music

Woo hoo! Friends of Seattlest Mean Recess are releasing a CD Saturday at Jules Mae, a release which Seattlest quite possibly personally caused to be delayed, by the way. Man Rockwell and Spanish for 100 are also playing and there's no YouTube for any of them, sadly. Also, Seattlest's own Kim Ruehl is at Cafe Bella downtown tonight at 9. more ›

Uwajiwhat: Curry in a Hurry

Since our last Uwajiwhat focused on coconut milk, it seems appropriate to address the other staple in our Thai pantry: curry paste. And the best of the bunch is again Mae Ploy. more ›

Uwajiwhat: A-OK Coconut Milk

Uwajiwhat: A-OK Coconut Milk

Sometimes it seems like every Seattle street corner has teriyaki, Tully’s, or a Thai restaurant. Everyone’s got a favorite place for Thai food (ours are actually in Issaquah and Tukwila), though we prefer to cook and eat it at home. Thai cooking is fairly easy once you get the hang of it. more ›
