Here are a few of our suggestions for celebrating Farmers Market Week (August 7-13th).
A Few Ways to Celebrate Farmers Market Week
Naming Rights: Madrona
Last week we ventured to Magnolia, named for a case of mistaken identity involving the native madrona trees. In that vein, we'll hopscotch to the west, to the neighborhood of Madrona.
Swine Flu: The New Snow Day
Students and teachers of Madrona Elementary School in Seattle were told this morning they will have week off from school (what, no snow day?), as a precautionary measure against spreading swine flu. An 11-year-old boy from the K-8 school was hospitalized and is considered one of the six "suspected" cases (meaning he tested positive for type A Influenza, which is generally found in swine flu) to be infected with the piggy swine flu. King County Public Health Official, Dr. Jeff Duchin shared in a press conference this a.m. that the CDC won't have "suspected" case results for a couple of days. So until then, do what your mother always told you: cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough and always wash your hands.
Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, March 27-29
DOWN ON THE CORNER: The Corner, our favorite one monthly live hiphop night down at the Rendezvous, has its one-year anniversary tonight. (Already?!) As usual, Oldominioner Candidt has put together a stellar line-up: JFK of Grayskul, Silent Lambs Project with Lisa Loud, and UW reps Rudy & The Rhetoric; he'll also throw in a set of his own. So solid. We've been looking forward to this for months now!
Jobs, Budget Cuts, Shootings...Hey, Happy Presidents Day!
It's Presidents Day, and since the libraries are closed, students and unemployed workers are taking it to the Governor over the budget--which Rep. Ross Hunter is calling "horrific" for its deep cuts. Meanwhile Madrona is reacting to a fatal shooting there last night. We were just trying wipe last night's odd dream involving Ron Sims (!) from our consciousness, and then he shows up in the morning beaming about his political record.
We Went: Seattle's Newest Museum Cafe
Last Friday we got a chance to poke our noses into the Northwest African American Museum before it opened, as part of a test lunch group for the St Clouds Museum Cafe. The Museum is in the historic Colman School, at 23rd and Massachusetts. It's historic now, that is -- back when we lived across the street, on 25th, it was condemned, boarded up, and left a home for pigeons, until a group of black activists arm-wrestled the city into letting them do something with it. Upstairs there are two floors of "affordable" rental units (studios are $620) for artists, historians, teachers, and anyone else with a good reason to make their home above the Museum.
