Hugo House Dares Us to Remember

Hugo House will be officially kicking off its 2009-2010 Literary Series this Friday with well-known Seattle favorites such as Rebecca Brown, Keri Healey, Eric McHenry, and local hip-hop artist Macklemore.

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, March 13-15

HIPHOP EXTRAVAGANZA: My, oh my, Seattle hiphop fans are in luck this weekend: the Blue Scholars are doing a stripped-down version of last year's The Program, with three nights at Neumos. This time, Common Market will join them every night; Truckasaurus and very special guests are playing on Saturday, Macklemore and Dyme Def will play on Monday night. Saturday's already sold out, but the second two nights are equally as awesome. Don't miss it. Really.

We're starting to go stir-crazy at Seattlest HQ, though a spicy tuna roll and some grapefruit juice have provided a much-needed bracing nutritional slap on the back to keep us moving through the afternoon. The video below helped a lot, too, and so we're sharing it. Georgio Brown, with Coolout TV, has been filming and archiving Pacific NW hip-hop for almost eighteen years now. He's finally started to post some of his material on YouTube, and this one warmed our heart's cockles in particular because it features four of the best artists in local hip-hop today--all in one, condensed segment with astonishingly good audio quality. Dyme Def, Macklemore (performing the famous "White Privilege"), Fatal Lucciauno and D. Black star in this installment.

JUST LIKE CLOCKWORK: This is your best bet for smooth grooving local hiphop this weekend. Clockwork probably make you very happy, but Macklemore is guaranteed to do so; his live show is unstoppably entertaining and his songs are both thoughtful and hilarious. This is his first show in town since July, people. Plus, XPerience might sing and Candidt might do "VooDoo." All of those prospects in combination are absolutely worth the rainy drive to Nectar.

An enthusiastic crowd of youngsters showed up at Nam's album release party at the Vera Project this weekend to appreciate energetic performances from The Physics, Bambu, super-talented super-group Good Medicine, and Nam himself. Though The Stranger billed this night as a Good Medicine show, every artist on the bill pointed the glory towards Nam and his "de-boo" album, Exhale.

OPERATION BRIGHT PINK FLAMINGO: If you were at Myrtle Edwards Park last weekend, you may have noticed a city-approved flock of plastic flamingos hanging out on the lawns. Lest you prematurely begin the spiral into "WTF, can't we just have normal public art," let us inform you that the flamingos were only visiting to remind everyone that real Chilean flamingos are available as of tomorrow to gawk at over in the Woodland Park Zoo. There will be free mini-cupcakes, music, and stilt-walking at the Zoo to mark the opening of the summer exhibit.

Macklemore, recently back from touring Europe, sat down with us at Vivace last Saturday to discuss his art, his ego, and his shoes (among other topics). Get the low-down here, and don’t miss the man’s show at the Vera Project tonight with Illmaculate and Ricky Pharoe!

Nectar was full of hiphop fans anticipating the power line-up on Saturday night. Macklemore, back from a tour in Europe, headlined in a masterful performance with special guests XPerience (out of Olympia) and Evan Roman; Grayskul (and his shaggy-haired little brother!) rocked some of his solo work, and we finally got to hear Wizdom do his thing. Wiz's solid work was actually upstaged by his special guest, Grynch, who is astoundingly, consistently good at focusing his energy and drawing in the crowd.
