Seattle Dreams of Naked Newscasters

There are certain pastimes we don't condone, and one of them is thinking about our local TV newscasters naked while delivering the 11 p.m. news. Ack! We blame top local radio station Star 101.5, whose "Local TV Newscaster You'd Like to See Naked" contest recently named KING-TV's investigative news correspondent Jesse Jones of "Get Jesse!" and KIRO-TV forecaster Rebecca Stevenson as the hands-down winners of the annual contest. Honorable mention to runner up KOMO-TV weatherman Jim Castillo and KING's Joyce Taylor. more ›

It's Funny Because It's True

Phew, what a week. We've had the two Port resignations, all the school closure hullaballoo, Noemi Lopez' killer landing in custody, and--late yesterday--a breakthrough in the viaduct arguments. To be honest, we'd like nothing more than to laugh about all of this. Enter, stage South End: Sable Verity's eminently LOL-worthy guest column on the Rainier Valley Post, in which she imagines the weekend wrap-up conversation between the governor, the mayor, the school district superintendent, and the county executive. It is hilariously spot on, and exactly the dose of intelligent humor we needed to get us through a rainy Friday. more ›

Please Sir, I Want Some More Details

Ooooh—the Seattle P-I has launched their new crime blog, Seattle 911. It's a resting place for the flotsam and jetsam of the city's police and fire departments, where morbidly fascinated readers can take in side stories, breaking crime news, and details from daily reports. more ›

    Is Groping the New Stabbing?

    Is Groping the New Stabbing?

Just last week, Seattlest reported to you that there seemed to be an alarming number of stabbings in Seattle, judging by local news reports. While we haven't noticed many stabbing-related stories this week, it appears there is a new crime du jour in the headlines: serial anonymous groping. We've already written about south Seattle's serial groper twice this week. With yesterday's arrest of a suspect in the south Seattle attacks, we were hoping to see 100% fewer headlines about anonymous groping assaults. No such luck. Our nightly perusal of local news websites found this headline on KOMO 4: "Police seek public's help in nailing Puyallup groper." The headline was located directly underneath the story regarding the arrest of Darin Boler, Seattle's suspected serial groper.

Divine Providence Gives Us Earth Hour and Pillow Fight on the SAME Day

Divine Providence Gives Us Earth Hour and Pillow Fight on the SAME Day

We love our Mother Earth, but this is kind of silly. One hour of turning off the lights, everybody at once? It's called Earth Hour, and it's happening all over the country. Whatever, it certainly can't hurt. So, everyone, turn your lights off tomorrow night from 8-9pm, and show those, um, anti-Earth people. more ›

    Spokane Monkey to Be Executed

    Spokane Monkey to Be Executed

Since we've covered the rest of this story, Seattlest would feel hardly right ignoring the poor monkey's death sentence. As reported on the rounds of tonight's local news, the macaque monkey who bit three people in Spokane will be euthanized. The city of Spokane has determined there is no other way to be certain the monkey, Chico, is rabies-free. more ›

    Today in Local Arson News...

    Today in Local Arson News...

Seriously, we're surprised the local news stations have not created special icons to attach to all of their recent environmentally-motivated arson stories. Usually, if an event has gone on this long or had this much prominent news coverage in Seattle, local newscasters have given it some sort of pet-name by now. more ›

More Bad Luck for Ferry Users

It seems every time we check a local news site, which is pretty regularly...okay hourly, there's a report of another malfunctioning ferry. According to our unscientific, educated guesstimate, The Washington State Ferry Service has only had a few days of normal running schedules in the past month. more ›

Local Musicians "Fired Up, Ready to Go" For Barack Obama

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's speeches (and his very presence in the race) are inspiring people to speak up, chant—and now sing—about embracing change. Jon, Joe and Jake Bergevin, Kirkland-based brothers and musicians all, got some local colleagues together to record "Fired Up, Ready to Go" in response to Obama's uplifting words. more ›

All-Star Tuesday: The Most Wonderful Day of the Year

Canada Isn't The Sanctuary She Used To Be

Canada Isn't The Sanctuary She Used To Be

Everything we know about dodging the draft by heading to Canada we learned from The Brothers K and popular mythology. So, we don't know much. Little before our time, there. Despite the fact that today's army is all volunteer (and today's Canada is more Conservative) there are still some soldiers waiting out Iraq up north. Almost everyone that this Salon article mentions seems to have already pulled a shift in the Middle East and is in Canada dodging a redeployment. The article talks about these soldiers (they estimate some 250 of them) and the great lengths that Canada has gone to to see that they are returned to the U.S. military. more ›

    Zioncheck Goes Hollywood

Ex-Seattleite, ex-Stranger-nic and ex-grassroots campaign manager Phil Campbell wrote a book that we loved about Grant Cogswell's run for City Council in the wake of WTO. The book is Zioncheck for President, which we've discussed with Phil in the past. Now Stephen Gyllenhaal has bought the rights to the film adaptation and plans to produce the thing DIY style here in Seattle. more ›

Our Morning Commute Is About to Get Shorter

Our Morning Commute Is About to Get Shorter

Our actual drive time won't change, but it's about to feel shorter. Morning host Deborah Brandt is leaving KUOW in mid-February:

At KUOW, Deborah Brandt, who has been the local host for "Morning Edition" for nine years, is departing in mid-February. Derek Wang, who had been weekend host, will succeed Brandt. Wang, in turn, will be replaced by Jamala Henderson.
Excuse us while we reconsider our skepticism about karma. The mighty John Moe may be gone -- but Brandt's departure almost balances the scales. more ›

Small Plane Crashed into NYC Building

Gothamist, among many others, is reporting that a plane has apparently crashed into a building on the upper east side--you can see the exact location on 72nd via Gothamist's Googlemap hack. Currently it is being reported as a helicopter that crashed into the building. You can see pictures at the Gothamist site (national news sites didn't have anything yet, but they've got screen captures from local news up on their site). more ›

Latino a Go-Go in the Central District

Latino a Go-Go in the Central District

There's a whole lot of latino going on in the park right outside our house in the Central District. Normally our neighborhood is exceptionally quiet all day, save for the sound of baking donuts from Gai's, until the little league softball or pee-wee football teams start showing up around 2:30. So we were mighty surprised to hear quite the ruckus out in Judkins Park, and peeking out we saw at least a couple hundred people in the park--more than pass through in a month, we'd wager. more ›

    Why P-I?

    Why P-I?

Seattlest is a SeattlePI.com power user (so you don't have to be) so we get real excited about new website functionality over there. Yesterday the P-I launched something new with the unfortunate "my" prefix (which does immediately let you know exactly what it is, but is tired nonetheless). Ok, you've been a web user for some time now. We're assuming you're pretty savvy or you wouldn't be here and you can probably guess what "My-PI" does without any training wheels from Seattlest, but that's not going to stop us from rambling on for another couple hundred words. more ›

You Know Gas Costs Too Much When...

As Seattlest was falling asleep last night we caught a glimpse of a teaser for a local news story that we couldnt stay awake to watch: an escort ad client shot by a pimp for refusing to reimburse the escort's gas money. The teaser included a shot of a two-page spread-eagled escort ad section from one of the local alternative weeklies. more ›

    P-I, Not Playboy

Maybe a Playboy Centerfold can generate excitement with a canned blurb and a posed photograph, but can a middle-aged newspaper columnist? The fearless P-I marketing department evidently thinks so, resulting in our favorite new feature of any local newspaper: "Get To Know…", on the back page of the P-I's local news section, beneath the weather report. more ›
