Turns out the stripped-down, de-logo-fied Starbucks up on 15th isn't quite the oh-so-original take on a neighborhood cafe that Starbucks intended. Linda Derschang, the owner of Smith, right next door, has sent an enraged letter over to the Stranger.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR LINDA'S: Capitol Hill mainstay and Linda Derschang's namesake bar celebrates its 15th birthday tonight, starting at 4 p.m. The first 100 people to show up get a free commemorative t-shirt, but for the rest of us, it's $2.99 cheeseburgers and 1994 beer prices all night. That's when beer was like, what, a nickel? Music care of DJ Damaged Goods.
As we were saying just yesterday, there's a new cafe in town. Oddfellows Cafe. They opened in the teeth of weather in the teens last night, so we thought we owed it to them to trudge down Broadway and take a look at the new digs. It's much more spacious inside than we expected, more like Smith than cozy little Volunteer Park Cafe. The menu was limited, thanks to the effects of snowy, icy streets on deliveries. But the bar was pouring cocktails, and the beef stew had already won some hearts. (Sidebar: since we were promised a "great value" on food, can we discuss the $6 side of French fries? Seems de trop, even with a "special sauce." You know, what with the ongoing "longest recession of the post-war era" and all?)
Nightlife maven Linda Derschang (left) partners with Ericka Burke for new all-day venture.
Let's see what's in the mailbag. Volunteer Park Cafe tells us: "We are now using Molly Moon Ice Cream. Haven’t tasted her Salted Caramel Ice Cream yet?" Why no, we haven't. Nor, to our shame, have we been by to sample some of your matzoh ball chicken soup. What is wrong with us? Plus, Ericka's collaboration with Linda Derschang, the Odd Fellows Hall cafe + bar, opens (in theory) on December 19. That's 10th and East Pine on Capitol Hill.
Linda Derschang, of Linda's Tavern and King's Hardware fame, is joining forces with Ericka Burke of the Volunteer Park Cafe to bring you the newest "quintessential neighborhood hangout" on Capitol Hill...and according to this post on Craigslist, the duo is now hiring for a variety of positions for the cafe! The so-called Oddfellows Cafe and Bar, to be located at 10th and Pine and opening in early December, "will be serving Stumptown coffee, homemade baked goods, breakfast, lunch & dinner," as well as "beer, wine & cocktails." We'll reserve judgment about the food itself until we've had a chance to check it out, but we'd put money on this cafe as the next hip place to be employed. Thanks to Seattlest tipster Sarah! (And h/t to CHS, which we just saw posted about this earlier today.)
So much new stuff! Food critic Bethany over at the Slog tipped us off about Cafe Presse opening not far from our office so we sauntered over for a lunchtime look-see. We spotted it easily because of the yellow sign. It's on the west side of 12th Avenue, on the block south of Madison, forming a French triangle (un triangle français) with Licorous and Lark. Maybe they can all field a soccer team against Stellina and La Spiga.
Are strong as iron bands.Ah, Longfellow. That shit's not bad, and it makes a cultured way to introduce our first-ever stop into Smith, the new bar from Linda Derschang on 15th Ave. Yes, there's a happy hour and we were there and now we can report that when Linda says she's gonna open a bar on Tuesday June 19 goddammit it's gonna open on Tuesday June 19 and it's gonna look pretty good inside.
Just when the CHS blog was getting antsy, our friend Bosco emailed us with the date in question: Smith is set to open Tuesday, June 19. And not a moment too soon. We've been doing the Mervyn's lady "Open Open Open" chant for weeks now. For those of you not familiar, Smith is the newest watering hole from Linda Derschang, goddess of the Seattle-friendly hotspot.
