While Seattle's Garfield High School Jazz Band did score a stirring victory in the national Essentially Ellington jazz competition earlier this month they were not so lucky on the basketball court. But they do have a pretty cool story to impress next fall's dormmates with: They played basketball against Wynton Marsalis.

Back in 1981, Mike Nichols directed a famous version of at the Lincoln Center in NYC, starring Steve Martin and Robin Williams. We recall that at some point in college, we saw an interview with Steve Martin about that production, and Martin said something memorably apt: "We decided to serve the comedy of the play, because the ideas would serve themselves."

The musical “Light in the Piazza,” which had its premiere at Seattle's Intiman Theatre in 2003, moved on to Chicago, then Broadway, and bagged six Tonys last night. The New York Times notes it was the biggest single winner of the evening:
