It happens every year. You and your friends chat on Facebook about which acts you want to see and which days you're going to go. You toy with the idea of getting the three-day pass, but assume it's out of your league. You fantasize about all the hip kids and great acts and daytime drinking. But then, you wait too long. You spend so much time talking about going...but for whatever reason (money), you don't actually purchase the tickets. For weeks. And then, the news comes:
Sold. Out. Don't let it happen to you this year. Cheap tickets go on sale at 10 a.m.
Quit Slacking: Get Your Tickets to the Capitol Hill Block Party Today at 10 a.m.
Gallery: Les Savy Fav, Down to His Skivvies and Still Workin It
We had no clue what to expect when it came to the Les Savy Fav show, we were newbs you could say. The opener, local hardcore band Absolute Monarchs, were as good as ever bathed in red light to add a little blood-lust feel. Then Steel Tigers of Death floated (seemingly) on stage in angel costumes which they later stripped (to our delight!) down to gold undies a la Rocky Horror. Even if they weren't killing it musically, the show would have sold us anyway. Then the main event, and holy cow was it an event. Frontman Tim Harrington made at least three different wardrobe changes, each time stripping down to nearly nothing. He repeatedly jumped down into the already mosh-tastic crowd creating even more of a crush. Truly amazing show that is not to be missed next time they come to town. We'll be there for sure. Check out the flickr collection for the full range of photos.
Sunday Show Suggestion, Les Savy Fav at Neumos Tonight
Searching for something fun to do on this chilly Sunday night? Look no further than Capital Hill, for Neumos has a hell of a show waiting for you tonight. Les Savy Fav, an interesting mix of rock, grunge, punk, and something else, will get your blood pumping. They've been together since '95 when their sound was harder and much more underground. Since then they've lost a few band members and gained a few more adding a less abrasive tone. Older fans aren't deterred, but the change (which happened around 2007 after their year-plus hiatus) eased them into a bigger fan-base. It doesn't hurt that they've got a lot of band-based fans as well with their name showing up in lyrics here and there. Begging the question, "Who is this Les Savy Fav anyway?"
KEXP Releases Bestest Live Compilation to Date
Volume One was pretty cool. Two was better. Three was great. Volume Four is hands down the best. Is it simply because it's new? Because the songs are still fresh? We don't think so. There's more more to it than that.
Capitol Hill Block Party in Brief, Les Savy Fav in Briefs
Head Like a Kite: By the time we got into Neumos, we'd unfortunately missed most of their set. Whatever they were playing when we walked in, it was awesome and everyone was into it. It wasn't long, however, before they went into show-closing mode with more ethereal, experimental jam stuff. We dig Head Like a Kite, but they also bore us sometimes.
Capitol Hill Block Party Line-Up Announced
Hooray! The first batch of the Capitol Hill Block Party line-up for this summer has been announced, and we're thrilled to see what a truly fine list it is. Hot groups such as Vampire Weekend, Les Savy Fav, Kimya Dawson, and The Physics are already confirmed, with nary a six-hour-long Spoon set to be found. (Okay, so maybe last year's Spoon performance wasn't exactly six hours long, but it kinda felt like it.)
Weekend Music
As previously mentioned, Les Savy Fav play Neumo's tonight. If the idea of a pregnant dude spitting water on you doesn't quite float your boat, head to the Croc to check out Cave Singers and Fleet Foxes. Tonight is also a free-free-free hip hop show at the War Room with Bun B and Swizz Beatz, care of the redundantly good people at Goods and Zune. Show up early; the last event like this, with Clipse...
Last Chance to Win Les Savy Fav Tix
Indie underground vets Les Savy Fav manage to be both experimental and catchy. It's a tough balancing act, but the NYC quartet pulls it off with aplomb, especially on latest (and greatest) album Let's Stay Friends. The art-leaning band with academically-inclined lyrics is equally well-known for its intense live shows, with frantic frontman Tim Harrington providing a great deal of the spastic energy and wildman antics, as well as the costumes and gratuitous nudity....
Stay Friends with Les Savy Fav
Art-punk quartet Les Savy Fav has scored the best reviews of their ten-year-plus career for their latest album Let's Be Friends. Truth be told, we never really paid attention to the band until this release, probably because the term "art-punk" is a mite too pretentious for our tastes. Whatever the case, the angular new album totally does it for us, from the heady statement of intent on opening track "Pots and Pans" to the...
