The M's win 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth on Ichiro's two-out walk-off single -- Ich's 148th hit of the season, which puts him exactly at the pace of his record-setting 262-hit season in 2004. Washburn allowed just 1 run in 7 IP in what may have been his last start as a Mariner, but didn't get the win due to a bullpen collapse. M's 52-48, 7.5 GB. Box score. Next game Weds. vs. TOR, 1:40 p.m.; Rowland-Smith vs. Halladay.

The Weekend in Sportsball: Bye-Bye, M's Playoff Hopes

In every non-playoffs sports season, you can date the moment when your team's hopes collapsed. For the last place 2008 Mariners, it was approximately mid-April. This year's Mariners lasted far longer in the playoff hunt. Nevertheless, July 24-26 was their undoing.

Boy Howdy Did We Miss a Doozy of a Storm Game Last Night!

All we missed was perhaps the most dramatic local sports event of the year, a three-overtime classic that included a team-record seven three pointers from Sue Bird, an ejection for Lauren Jackson, and twelve lead changes.

What team can get thoroughly outclassed, yet consider their game a success? The Sounders, if they draw 65,000 fans to Qwest Field -- most of them in Sounders green -- for a game against international powerhouse Chelsea FC.

Storm 66, Sacramento 55

Swin Cash led the team in scoring for the third straight game, getting 18 points as the Storm jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Lauren Jackson made her impact on the defensive end, getting four blocks. Props also to Tanisha Wright, who had 7 assists. Storm 8-4, 2nd place, .5 GB. Box score. Next game Sunday vs. Chicago, 6 p.m.

Phew! What a day!

Phoenix 93, Storm 81

The Storm usually hold Cappie Pondexter in check, but not tonight as she nearly had a triple-double. They had issues with the refs, too, as LJ and Swin Cash both got technical fouls. Once again, the Storm got next to no production from their bench, which managed just 8 points. All starters finished in double figures. Storm 6-4, 1 GB. Box score. Next game Tues. vs. San Antonio at KeyArena, Noon.

M's Serve Baseball's Best Team; Lose Beltre: The Mariners started their road trip with a surprising 2-1 series win over the Dodgers, who have baseball's best record. The highlight was Felix Hernandez's nine-K performance on Saturday night, with homers by Griffey and Branyan providing the offense. Bad news came that night as well: Adrian Beltre will miss 6-8 weeks, he's getting surgery to remove painful bone spurs in his shoulder.

Storm 93, Phoenix 84

The Storm tie Phoenix atop the Western Conference in an entertaining, fast-paced game reminiscent of last year's Pac-10 men's UW/Arizona battles. The Storm jumped ahead early behind Swin Cash's ten first quarter points, but the Mercury came back to grab the lead in the second half. Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson took over in the fourth, with Bird scoring 7 unanswered to open the quarter, and Jackson hitting a game-clinching three. Storm 5-2, T1st. Box score. Next game Friday vs. LA Sparks.

Storm 88, Minnesota 71

Lauren Jackson was her usual brilliant self, recording a double-double; but how about Tanisha Wright! The much-maligned fifth-year guard scored 17 points on 9 shots, and had 7 assists to just 1 turnover. Plus she held Candace Wiggins to just 7 pts. Storm 3-1, T1st. Box score. Next game Sunday @ Chicago.

Sue Bird Stays Aggressive, Storm Start 2-0

By establishing herself as an offensive threat, Bird's forcing teams to guard her and opening up the floor for her teammates. As a result, she leads the league in assists with 16 in two games.

After the loss of Lauren Jackson to ankle surgery a few weeks ago, the Storm powered their way into the playoffs with strong defense, good rebounding and an uptick in backcourt scoring. Last night, in their 71-64 season-ending loss to the L.A. Sparks, the Storm failed on all three.

ROOTS MUSIC IN BALLARD!?: Yeah, we know this happens pretty much every night, but there's a good batch of bands at the Tractor tonight. Local singer-songwriter outfits Husbands Love Your Wives and Jack Wilson & The Wife Stealers open a bill for the wonderful and interesting anti-folk fabulousness of Elliot Brood from north of the border (and east a bit).

Sue Bird is on a mission. With WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson nursing a bad ankle, Bird scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Seattle Storm to a 70-62 win over the Chicago Sky. The win seals a playoff spot for the fifth year in a row.

The Seattle Storm downed host Atlanta Dream Tuesday night 83-69 behind Sue Bird's 21 points and 9 assists. Camille Little and Yolanda Griffith each added 16 points in a win which moved the Storm into a first-place tie with San Antonio for the best record in the Western Conference at 19-10. The Storm resume their road trip in Chicago on Thursday night.

The Seattle Storm had good news on and off the court last night. At Key Arena, the Storm downed the Houston Comets 66-49, behind Sue Bird's 22 points, who before the game promised to pick up her offensive play with the loss of Lauren Jackson. Earlier in the day, Jackson had successful ankle surgery and walked out of the hospital. Team officials hope she might be ready for the second round of the WNBA playoffs. (However, those Aussies sure have a strange way of breaking good news.)

The Seattle Storm return to Key Arena tonight at 7:00 p.m. as the WNBA regular season draws to a close after pausing for the Beijing Olympics. At 17-9, the Storm are a half game in back of San Antonio for the Western Conference lead going into the final three weeks of play. The team faces a severe challenge, as star forward Lauren Jackson will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. Jackson was the team's leading scorer, averaging just over 20 points per game.

THAT'S FUNNY, BITCHES: Chris Rock is one of those people who can just stand there and we'll laugh. But when he opens his mouth, forget it. We kind of laugh so hard we can't even hear what he's saying half the time, cycling through our various laughs from chuckle to cackle and snort. So you're probably glad we won't be at the Paramount tonight for his show. We'd just distract everything, and he'd probably make fun of us. Which would be funny.

Storm forward Lauren Jackson has opted for surgery on her right ankle immediately after she finishes play in the Olympics, effectively ending her season with the WNBA franchise. The Storm are 17-9 heading into the final weeks of play in the 2008 season. League play was halted due to the Olympics. Jackson will be out 4-6 weeks and has an outside chance of returning for the playoffs.

We love Australians, probably because they aren’t as Eurotrashy as our trans-Atlantic friends, and they are seemingly the only other country on the globe that has a reasonable disdain for soccer.

After years of active avoidance, Seattlest went to our first-ever Storm game Saturday night. And it was the best sporting event we've been to this year.

Here in Seattle, it's a slow sports day. The only major local team in action is the Husky women's basketball team, who host Michigan tonight. It's high school basketball night, but there aren't any particularly compelling matchups.

There is no doubt that the Seattle Storm's Lauren Jackson is among the top five female basketball players of all-time. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.

Unless you count the grillers at Teddy Bear BBQ in Monroe, the Seattle Storm are the only local team with a world championship.
