No matter what Dane Cook's myspace page says, the Reverend Dr. Samuel McKinney, narrator of the gospel musical Black Nativity, is the only person you'll see on a Seattle stage this month who went to school with Martin Luther King, Jr. Our favorite part of this consistently entertaining show was watching 80-year-old McKinney--who also once met Langston Hughes, its author--tap his toes, silently sing along, and break into a smile during the solos by the Total Experience Gospel Choir. more ›

This month at the Screenwriters Salon, it's noted local filmmaker Brian McDonald at the mic. Seattlest has this freaking eterna-cold that's going around now, so we're still deciding whether or not to infect the goings on with our presence. It's a tough call, because McDonald's take on story structure in film is particularly insightful and grounded. more ›

Seattlest has been looking forward to the opening of Central Cinema since we first heard of its existence-to-be a year ago. Kevin Spitzer's idea for a restaurant-cum-theater just plain appeals to us, especially since he's planning to feature movie-themed menus, like truffles accompanying Chocolat or spicy noodles with Tampopo. If the chefs are able to recreate that amazing meal from Big Night, Seattlest will be one contented food/film lover. more ›
