Can't Miss It: Wednesday

TOWN HALL TWOSOME: We mentioned yesterday that blogging meteorologist Cliff Mass is showing up at Town Hall tonight (7:30 p.m., $5), but it's a tough choice, because Crosscut's Knute Berger and author Tim Egan are appearing to argue over what we think of as Berger's contrarian Bible: Pugetopolis: A Mossback Takes on Growth Addicts, Weather Wimps, and the Myth of Seattle Nice. God knows you should never take Berger seriously, but it should be entertaining. David Brewster will somehow find the time to moderate. more ›

STELLA! YOU MAKE US YELL-A!: It's a good week when we get to use the phrase "comedic stylings," and the stylings of Stella--that's Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain--fall squarely in the comedic category. We're not really "comedy" people, but even we have seen Michael Ian Black live and laughed like there was no tomorrow--when in fact there was, and that became a whole thing we won't get into. The group has been called "bizarre, nonsensical, and very funny" and "dumb comedy in a suit," if that gives you some idea. more ›

A Reading From The Sustainable Book Of Knu-daw-neat

A Reading From The Sustainable Book Of Knu-daw-neat

If you were here right now, you'd see us looking around suspiciously like we don't quite trust we're awake because we just read Knute Berger's latest deep thought over at Crosscut and we...agree with him.

While promoting green consumption might be politically more palatable than getting people to change their habits and expectations, promoting consumption still offers an answer that doesn't solve the bigger problem. Global warming's hawks have to be honest with us: Fighting the good fight isn't all economic upside. We're going to have to do more with less.

Be Free, Knute

Be Free, Knute

Blogging duties can really get on top of traditional reporter and columnist types. Their days are already packed with making phone calls, dicking around on the internet, occasionally driving somewhere, occasionally tapping out a story; how the hell are they supposed to find time to write on the internet on top of all that? Everyone just wants to talk on the internet anyway - No one's listening on the web. The public demands you start a blog for months and you resist. Finally the word comes down from the top, "You're blogging now," and no one reads the damn thing. You know what, screw this. more ›

Mossback Sneers At Preposterous Idea Of Not Driving Cars As Much As Possible

Mossback Sneers At Preposterous Idea Of Not Driving Cars As Much As Possible

Here's the set-up: Alan Durning of the Sightline Institute, the Real Change Bus Chick, and the Petersons over on the Eastside have riled up the Seattle Weekly's Knute Berger. According to Berger (and if you're used to any semblance of logical consistency, grab a handrail and hold on), the problem with not having a car, or using one less, is that you become a moocher. more ›

Don't ML King Me, King County

Don't ML King Me, King County

King County Councilman Larry Gossett is re-submitting his proposal to the City Council this month to spend $600,000 on changing the county's logo from a crown to the likeness of Dr. Martin Luther King. In a recent email to our local neighborhood council (Jackson Place), Gossett indicated that this would "finally give respect and visibility to the fact that our County's namesake is Dr. King." more ›

We Also Read the Weeklies: PanzerKardinal Edition

Last week we guessed that this was going to be a big week for papal comment in the weeklies, and we're glad to see we weren't wrong. We were hoping for some fresh perspectives, or maybe some Seattle angle to the commentary, but maybe that was expecting a lot. Knute Berger in "Mossback" was the first to weigh in on the Catholic boss and the whole "the Vatican isn't a Democracy so why don't we go invade it" joke is tired and not funny, but we were surprised and delighted when he called out the secular right at the end of the column. Thanks, Knute! We forgot there was a secular right! For more comment on Dregs Benedict in this week's Seattle Weekly see "Glory Days" in the arts section. more ›
