Last time Junior Boys came to town, we weren't all that impressed. They lacked a connection with the crowd and we ended up paying more attention to the audience than the band. The music was good though. Well, this show musically was again up to par, with the band playing "all the hits" that their KEXP-listening audience expected. The difference this time was the rapport between band and audience, brought forth by the change of venue (this show was at Chop Suey, while the last was at Neumos). In our mind, Chop Suey reasserted its position as our favorite show venue. more ›

Last night at Neumo's, the 4th annual KEXP Yule Benefit was chockablock with music. We missed out on local band The Hands and showed up mid-set for Annuals, for whom we saw enough of their Arcade Fire-meets-Neutral Milk Hotel-meets Animal Collective sound to know that we need to see them in their entirety whenever they come to town again. more ›

Friday's Junior Boys show was pretty much what you saw in the preview post video from the West Hollywood show. Three guys on stage (although the drummer was barely visible way in the back), playing beautiful songs that melded rock and electronic elements ("electro-rock" as some will call it, but more Cure than Ladytron). If you actually watched the video rather than minimizing the window to listen, you will have noticed that there wasn't really much to see, as the band members were a bit...lacking in stage presence. Not a lack of confidence or musical skill, but Friday's show on-stage amounted to a lot of "nothing to see here," leaving you to find other places to land your gaze. more ›

In the days before the Internet, there was little way to know whether a concert was going to be a horrible or wonderful experience. Word of mouth moved too slowly between cities, so by the time tales of a bad concert came through it was long after you'd already wasted your money and your time. Those days are over, since YouTube provides almost immediate footage of what's going on in other cities.
