Friday was an epic night of 80s rock at Key Arena as Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger took the stage. All three bands brought out high energy for their last show on this tour, delighting all 17,000 folks who filled Key Arena. Perhaps the most curious part of the evening was waiting to see if Journey's 'new' lead singer Arnel Pineda could truly pull off fronting the band. There was certainly no mistaking his vocal talent as he started off the set belting out "Separate Ways" in true Steve Perry fashion. Pineda also had great energy as he bounced across the stage. On the downside, Pineda didn't have great chemistry with the rest of the band, which may have seemed more apparent had his vocals not been so on target. The fans didn't seem to mind seeing a new, young face associated with Journey--all that mattered was hearing the band's epic songs live. more ›

As for Journey, the enthusiastic and cover-band-ish Not-Steve (aka Arnel Pineda) stole the show with his unflagging energy. No, he's not Steve Perry. But Steve Perry couldn't be leaping around on the stage like that, and Pineda sounds eerily like his predecessor. With the exception of the end of "Don't Stop Believing," Pineda's voice was strong; we got concerned during those few questionable minutes, but Not-Steve fully recovered by the first bars of "Faithfully"--a song which was quite possibly the highlight of Journey's set. The other song we loved was "Lights," during which everyone did the obligatory cell-phone/lighter wave.
