Jonathan Lethem understands what being an unabashed fan feels like, and we are an unabashed, dorky fan of his many books and recent essays. When we heard that he is non-exclusively sharing some of his short stories for $1 to be reused in other works of art (films, songs, etc) and he is giving away the option to his new novel, You Don't Love Me Yet, and releasing the ancillary rights after five years, we realized he was moving even further into territory very dear to our heart. We chatted with him in advance of his appearance at the Seattle Arts and Lecture series Wednesday night.

Phillips traces the set of related causes that caused the downfall of historical world powers. That same combination of ills he says -- global over-reach, militant religion, resource problems, and ballooning debt -- is at work in the U.S. today.

Well, literary immortality, anyway. A gaggle of authors (some Seattlest-approved, some not-so-approved)- including Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Dave Eggers, John Grisham, Lemony Snicket, Michael Chabon, and Jonathan Lethem- will be auctioning the chance to have the winning bidder's name included in their next work. Clearly, a win would be somewhat conditional- if you want to use a friend's name, you have to get permission, for instance- but they seem pretty accommodating. That said, if your name is Amanda Huggnkiss or Mike Hunt, you had probably better skip this one.
