Can't Miss It: Thursday

OLD SCHOOL: Cass Dalglish, a poet and professor at Augsburg College, isn't content with just .

Sure, we've read his bestselling book, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child: The Heart of Parenting. Heck, we even own the DVD. But it wasn't until after last night's lecture at Town Hall, presented by Parent Map, that we could truly call ourselves John Gottman fans. He charmed the sold-out crowd with heartwarming anecdotes and stone-cold research, and by the time we left, we were better, calmer parents (or soon-to-be parents).

Early in our parenting career, we took a Bringing Baby Home class developed by UW researcher John Gottman. He gave us better parenting advice than any other resource, at least until we saw the Blue's Clues episode about being frustrated. (Stop, breathe, and think is our new mantra.)

Last night, Parent Map, a "Monthly Newsmagazine and Online Resource for Puget Sound Parents", hosted UW Emeritus Professor of Psychology Dr. John Gottman for a talk called "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work," as part of their Pathways lecture series for parents. New parents can check this site out.

NETWORKING: Seattle ContentNext Mixer: "the concept is simple: you come, you meet people, you talk. You do deals, too, of course (and then you tell us about them)."

SEATTLEST BOOK CLUB PICK: For March, we're reading Jonathan Raban's Surveillance, set in a not-so-distant future, when everyone's actions are highly monitored. Get a head start on the conversation by hearing from Raban himself. (We'll know if you went or not.)

If this were the Marvel Universe, John Gottman would be an X-Man. He's the marriage researcher who can, famously, watch a couple talk to each other for an hour and then predict with 95% accuracy whether or not their marriage is going to last.
