"Not Broken," Eh?

"Not Broken," Eh?

As our own Hanna Brooks Olsen put it on Friday, the Justice Department report that came out on Friday didn't tell us anything new; its findings merely reinforced what Seattle citizens, especially those of some ethnicity, have been saying for well over two decades: The people in the Seattle Police Department are wound a bit too tightly and it shows. It's been showing. more ›

SPD Accountability Forum Provides Fireworks, A Few Answers

SPD Accountability Forum Provides Fireworks, A Few Answers

Last night’s police accountability forum at Seattle City Hall, while filled with angry outbursts, protests and in many ways “uncivil” discourse, actually did provide some answers to the night’s primary question - “Where Do We Go from Here?” But you had to look past a lot of fireworks to see them. more ›

Drug War Ceasefire Comes to Seattle

Drug War Ceasefire Comes to Seattle

Diaz isn't terribly popular or supported by the rest of the department, so we're thinking all the noise about applying for the permanent position is probably not going to come to fruition. To hear him say it, he's not supported because he's been involved in so many disciplinary decisions over his 29-year career with the SPD. Being the boss means making unpopular decisions sometimes, but maybe there's more to the story (please, local gossip gods, let there be more). more ›
