Local hero and former Amazon employee Tom Nissley gave Seattle another reason to put up with Alex Trebek's painfully awkward commentary and that earwormy theme music, when he scooted into second place in the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions, winning a cool $100,000. It must be something in that Puget Sound water.
Seattleite Tom Nissley Finishes Second in Jeopardy's Tournament of Champions
Ken Jennings Welcomes Our New Robot Overlords.
In the distant future, when robots rule the earth (we all agree that this is definitely happening, right?) they may point their cold, metal fingers back at February 14 as the day that things started to change. This is the day that they'll have the first crack at beating humans at our own game-shows.
Can't Miss It: Thursday
NO WHAMMY!: We've been following Ballard's Tom Nissley as he cuts through the competition on Jeopardy for 7 wins in a row. Alex Trebek sets 'em up, Nissley knocks 'em down. He'll be going at it again tonight, hoping for his 8th straight, and we think he's got it. We think he just might go all the way. Can one do that in Jeopardy? Go all the way? The record for consecutive Jeopardy wins was set in 2004 by one-time UW student Ken Jennings, who won 74 games. Pay attention, there might be a quiz.
Jeopardy Win #7 for Tom Nissley
If we didn't think Tom Nissley was awesome simply due to his Jeopardy wins, we especially like the fact that his proceeds will help his wife establish her "sparkly vinyl handbag company."
Ballard Man on Major Jeopardy Winning Streak
Behold, the unstoppable force that is Tom Nissley. The Ballard resident (and editor at Amazon's Omnivoracious blog) clocked his third win in a row on Jeopardy last night and is back tonight at 7:30 p.m. on KOMO hoping to make it a four-peat.
Seattlest Interview: Emily Thorsley, Jeopardy! Champ
Larissa Kelly can stop looking over her shoulder. Local Jeopardy! champ Emily Thorsley was defeated by freelance journalist Greg Lindsay in her second game. We asked her a few questions about her experience.
Will Emily Thorsley Extend Her Jeopardy! Reign?
This evening, however, season 25 begins, and we get to find out if Thorsley can turn her win into a streak. Having played pub trivia against her many times, we know she's a formidable opponent, one who manages to know a lot of stuff about a broad range of topics. We won't be surprised if she becomes this season's Larissa Kelly ... though the next Ken Jennings might be a bit much to ask.
Seattle Has a New Jeopardy! Champ
When we passed our in-person audition for Jeopardy!, we knew one other potential contestant: Emily Thorsley. She's a regular at the Old Pequliar trivia night, and her team (formerly the Laser Rocket Arms, recently the KOMO 4 Problem Causers) has kicked our ass on many occasions. So we were unsurprised when Emily appeared on Friday's show and mopped the floor with Mark Wales, a 5-time champion. Emily's one-day cash winnings total $29,800, but we'll have to wait until later in August to see how she does in her second game, since the season 24 Tournament of Champions starts today. (And we'll cross our fingers for our own chances in season 25.)
