We'd always thought of Rilo Kiley as a band hazy with L.A. cool, and it's true, they aren't into between-song soliloquies--Lewis, in her spangly dress, was short on banter, saving that for lyrics that gained a second meaning at a live show. When she sang about out-reaching arms, arms shot up all over. Rilo Kiley songs often feature yearning women making "bad choices" and ending up not quite sure what happened there. Frog-kissed, there's still no prince. (They're also conflicted about money and sex appeal; "Dreamworld" had us wondering what Lindsay Buckingham has been up to lately.)

A few hours from now, London folktronic sextet Tunng kicks off the weekend early and for free at Nectar. Doors are at 5pm for the 21+ happy hour show.

The unfortunately named Grand Ole Party opened for Rilo Kiley Saturday night to an audience presumably not too familiar with their work. GOP have a strong, simple, raw kind of sound, not unlike White Stripes or Sweet 75, kind of directionless and inert, but impressive and energetic nonetheless. They ended the set with the first song on Humanimals, "Look Out Young Son," which after a couple of listens sounds like the strongest effort on the disc.

Would you believe us, if we told you the little girl who gave Ben Seaver his first kiss on the lovable TV show “Growing Pains,” has an album on the Easy Street and Sonic Boom Top-Seller lists?

One of our favorite MC's, Aesop Rock, is playing at the Showbox tomorrow night. We like him mainly because he has a great seesaw-type delivery and occasionally drops references to comic books. We like to think he is the MC we would have become if we had actual talent and didn't grow up in a small town in Pennsylvania.
