This will no doubt turn out to be the easiest Science Lecture to get a seat at: next week brings Harvard psychology profesor Steven Pinker (9/26) and double-helixer James Watson (9/27), and then in November there's Jonah Lehrer, author of Proust Was a Neuroscientist (11/13).

In our absence from doing anything remotely fun outdoors thanks to this city's attempts to break some 1953 record, we've retreated into full-blown science geekery. After Jared Diamond's Science Series lecture last night left us wanting in the science geek department, we're now on the edge of our seats as NASA's Stardust mission--a collector of dust and ice from the tails of comets--is scheduled to touch down Sunday at a military post outside Salt Lake City, UT. We're still trying to bribe members of our family in SLC to get as close as possible and snap some pictures.

Professor Jared Diamond might be wicked smaht (said with a proper Bawston accent like his), but he's no Edward Tufte. Stay with us on this one... We've attended one presentation by Tufte, and even considering the potentially drought-worthy material in some people's eyes (The Visual Display of Quantitative Information), he is more entertaining than Space Mountain. Despite the fact that Seattlest is mighty interested in the subject of Diamond's most recent book, that couldn't save his lecture for the Town Hall Science Series last night.

The holidays are over (except for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, of course), so authors are starting to make their way to Seattle again, ready to read excerpts and sign autographs so that you'll be tempted to buy their latest title. Here's a cheat sheet for the week in book tours.
