Another local will join Sims and Kerlikowske back East, now that Philip Reitinger--a senior infrastructure security guy at Microsoft--has been appointed to a leadership role with the Department of Homeland Security. He will take over next week as the deputy undersecretary of the National Protections Program Directorate. Wired points out that as Microsoft isn't exactly an industry leader in computer security, Reitinger's appointment "might be considered what some would call ironic." Hmm. Hackers, start your engines.

The need to develop alternative energy is one of the incoming Obama administration's talking points. Here in Washington, alternative energy looks a lot like huge wind farms east of the mountains; according to the Tacoma News Tribune, the state's wind farms are currently producing enough electricity to power two Seattles.

The Alaskan Way Viaduct is sketchy. So much so that it was featured in Popular Mechanics' special report "The 10 Pieces of U.S. Infrastructure We Must Fix Now." The Viaduct graces the list, which also includes Atlanta's failing water system, New Orleans' canal locks, Chicago's notorious O'Hare Airport, and the country's oldest suspension-bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge.

We apologize, Greg. We got a little hot under the collar last week, after hitting one pothole too many, and we became...intemperate. The Pothole Rangers are not hiding out; they're working hard and filling potholes whenever you notify them. This weekend we were biking along, ready to dodge this one (pictured), when we were startled to see it had been filled, just three days after our post about it. Point for Mayor Nickels and the transportation crew. Our high-mileage 1970s 3-speed thanks you.

The failing state of the roads on Capitol Hill (and maybe all over Seattle, we just happen to spend most of our time cursing Capitol Hill potholes) has been getting to us the last few days. Biking around, we're spending as much time avoiding potholes that will swallow our front tire as sleep-deprived drivers on cell phones. We wanted to get a photo to illustrate what we're talking about, and the only issue was, which huge pothole would it be?
