Primary '08: Hillary Mocks Your Latte
Also, we don't care that her people think that she has a bigger sack than Barack Obama. Please, just stick to killing horses.
Primaries '08: Unemployed Steel Workers Have Their Say
Thank the sweet lord that the Pennsylvania Primary is finally here.
Where Seattlest Interviews Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band
Last summer (ah, summer!) we drove down to Portland for their annual Pickathon Roots Music Festival, where we found ourselves exposed to all manner of folkies from Portland and beyond. One of the bands that stole the weekend for us was from Indiana, of all godforsaken places. On Saturday night, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band played a show in the barn that seriously blew our mind. Joined by Seattleite Jason Webley, they just played a flat-out barn burner of a show.
Seattlest Asks: Anyone Heard of the Western Sun?
You may recall that Seattlest recently moved to Rainier Beach.
State Advances, Zags Going Home
Washington State 70, Oral Roberts 54: Oral Roberts was the trendy upset pick--nearly 25% of ESPN users expected Wazzu to Coug it (by comparison, less than 5% had #3-seed Oregon losing)--but our faith in Wazzu didn't waver. Though it was close at halftime, we predicted that Wazzu would play their typical strangling defense to open the second half, and they proved us right, holding O-Rob to one field goal in the first six minutes of period two. The Cougs won going away. Wazzu continued their terrific offensive efficiency, committing only six (!) turnovers. Only Bobby Knight's Texas Tech Red Raiders committed as few on the tourney's first day, which should give you some insight into how good a coach Tony Bennett is.
Zags are Comfortable in Road Blues
1. Savvy and Scrappy Guard Play: neither the Zags or the Hoosiers rely on getting big points from big guys inside, so whichever team can get hot from three point range and defend the three the best will have an immediate advantage. The Zags experience gives them the edge.
Local Boys in the NCAAs
No, we can't root for the Huskies, but there are plenty of former kids who a few short years ago were playing in front of sparse crowds at some smelly high school gym, but in the next two days will play ball on a national stage:
Hey--Shouldn't We Get Winner?
One first round NCAA matchup is #2-seed UCLA against #15-seed Weber State--both teams that the Huskies beat!
Empire never had delusions of Soul!
the "sterile" and "cookie-cutter" nature that Schultz bemoans.
Apparently Haggard's Fanbase Is Backing Obama
After some un-Country-like hemming and hawing Seattlest decided that the Merle Haggard show was too expensive and we stayed home. Yeah, yeah, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it's the city -- once in a lifetime opportunities come up three or four times a week. Others went and are happy to tell us about it. We are very interested in this event from the evening, though:
Speaking Tour: 11/22 - 11/28
It's a holiday week, and people are too busy stuffing themselves with turkey and cranberry jam to talk much. Just hang on until Tuesday, when things really pick up.
One Of Our Pacific Silver Furs Is Missing
Thanks to an act of federal overreaching outraging Wiccans and Druidic Orders everywhere, the State of Washington has coughed up a 65-foot Christmas Tree for the U.S. Capitol Building in the other Washington. You might think it's funny that the federal government has made off with our tree, but how about this: child labor was part of the deal. It's "decorated with 10,000 lights and 3,000 ornaments handmade by schoolchildren." They really have no shame, do they?
Pop Phooey
Saturday night at Chop Suey, Indiana's Murder by Death stuck out like a broken thumb. They were, of four acts, the only one without Franz Ferdinand-style "Dance to me!" percussion, the only band that silenced the formidable teenage-girl contingent, and the only one that rocked.
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Celebrate Ben Franklin's 300th birthday with the Bikini Bandits and Phillyist! (NSFW). Speaking of Mr. Franklin, send in a picture of Ben (or Ed Rendell) with a red tongue and win a free t-shirt. And they might have the next YearlyKos in Philly.
Seattlest Interviews the Guys Behind QuizNight.net
Seattlest first encountered The Hoopleheads a few months ago when we gave trivia at The Jones a whirl. They beat us, though they didn't win the evening. We ran into them again on August 1 when we hosted trivia at the Old Pequliar. They won outright that evening, and introduced themselves after the contest. By the way, they said, we're working on a Seattle pub trivia website. Great, we replied, let us know when it's up and running.
Meet the Hometown Five
Now that the Sonics are dead to us, it's time to start meeting the only locally-owned team in the Pacific Northwest, your Portland Trail Blazers. First up--the Blazers' best player, power forward Zach Randolph. Randolph, an Indiana native who came to the NBA right after high school, averaged 18ppg and 8rpg last season. But what do we really care about? His crib (via Blazers Blog)...
At Neumo's We Saw Two Gallants Murder By Death
Actually, we heard Murder by Death (myspace) first, then Two Gallants (myspace). Both are remarkable for what we're going to inventively call "the new lyricism" -- a two-fisted Carver-esque stylistic concern for narrative produced by a mutant strain of whisky-slugging Decemberists from the wrong side of the tracks.
Sonics Pick Tenth, Let the Speculation Begin-eth
As the NBA's 10th worst team, the Sonics had about a 1/25 chance of getting one of the top three picks, and about a 9/10 chance of getting the 10th pick. They did not pick up an ace "on the river" however (if you have been unemployed in the past year you will know what this means), and so the tenth pick is theirs.
America's Next Top Model 4
New means of communication have always ushered in radical changes in our societal structure. The internet, the television, and the telephone have irrevocably changed our day-to-day existence. The latest communication method our society will have to prepare for is TyraMail. What is TyraMail, you ask. Is it some super-fast, spam-free, ultra-secure tool?
